0W40 Oil Wear After 5000 Miles

I decided to analyze my oil after i changed it today. My last oil change was ay 14700 miles and today's change came at 19800. I took a sample of the fresh oil i was putting in and compared it to the used oil i was taking out. Mobil 1 0W40 fully synthetic. The oil going in fresh tested at a viscocity of 10.2 cst which is near the mid range of a 30 weight oil. The used oil after 5000 miles came out at 9.1 cst or at the low end of a thirty weight oil. I was a little surprised by two things.

1. That the fresh oil came out so long on the viscosity index.
2. That the oil only really degraded about 10 percent over its "useful" life.

I haven't thought too much about that. I am considering testing some other 0w40 brands to try to pick up the viscosity. I am also considering doing a blend for my next change. I will be more than happy to keep everyone posted on the wear and tear of the oil. I didn't see anything alarming, no metal etc.

I didn't plan on going too deep into the analysis. The equipment in my lab really isn't designed for those variety of tests and it would require me to send it out. I do however plan on possibly investigating other brands to see which one holds up better over time. I will likely do my next change with something other than Mobil 1.

I know this has been dead for a bit, but I have a few questions. With this analysis/change did the Jeep tell you it was due, or do people not even listen to that?

The reason I ask is because my 2012 has 5058 miles today. My first "oil change due" message came at 2000 miles. I changed to Royal Purple and the XG2 from Fram. The "oil change due" message came yesterday at 5051 miles. Is the message set to change on a timeline? I do not beat on the vehicle, so this seems excessive.

Are folks just disregarding this message, or change it when it comes up?

One more quick thing a lot of people are under the misconception that oil wears out this is not true or oil needs to be changed because it becomes contaminated there are many semi trucks on the road that have 3 to 4 or more hundred thousand miles on the oil because they use what's called a bypass oil filter system this is a system that constantly filters the oil at a low rate in addition to the stock factory filter these filters are changed on a regular basis and oil analysis is done at that point there is a small amount of fresh oil that gets added when the filters are done and this refreshes the additives in the oil. The oil only gets changed when the lab tells you its time. Additionally analysis can alert you to impending disaster by letting you know if there are an increase in wear metals or coolant present or even fuel in the oil.
Testing is more practical for semi owners because obviously their financial future is at stake

went to the local Chrysler/jeep dealership to get my first oil change at 3000 miles and they told me they put 5w20 semi synthetic oil in all the hemis. I questioned them because all the stuff I received from SRT said to use Ow40 but they blew off my questions. They did their oil change and I called up SRT to ask about this and was told that yes it needs ow40 and it says so right on the oil cap. so I called the dealer manager and they totally skirted the issue of them putting the wrong oil in my truck. :slapfight: I also found out from SRT that the dealer wasn't SRT certified; shared that knowledge with the dealer manager and they said they were certified to work on SRTs. I was like hey Chrysler and SRT both told me you aren't so deal with it.

went to wal mart and got 10 quarts of the mobil1 ow40 for 48 bucks total and had the local Valvoline change it out and told them my story for a good laugh.

THE OIL CAP DONT LIE

I've been sending my oil (Pennzoil Ultra Full Synthetic) out to Blackstone for testing (bought a 6-pack). My plan is to use Full Synthetic 5W20 oil and change it every 6 months, which is about every 7,500 to 8,000 miles based on my driving.

The first was at 8,330 miles with 5,120 on the oil . They noticed wear-in materials (i.e. copper and silicon), but that was expected. They said I was fine to go 7,500 miles.

SUS Viscosity @ 210°F - 53.4
cSt Viscosity @ 100°C - 8.29
TBN - 4.0

The second was at 16,833 miles with 8,503 on the oil. They noticed a lower level of residual wear-in materials and said that I would be fine going 10,000 miles.

SUS Viscosity @ 210°F - 54.1
cSt Viscosity @ 100°C - 8.52
TBN - 3.1

One of these days I'll stop being lazy and post the full reports.

Note: Mine isn't an SRT. I have a V6 Limited so the oil characteristics may be different.
