13k yokos

I brought my srt in for service today to find out why the tire noise is deafening (again). Apparently, my tires are worn to 3/32 and 6/32. Is this normal after only 13k miles? These sound as bad as the Pirellis are supposed to be.

If you stick with the factory SRT alignment specs you'll burn through the inner edge of your tires no matter the brand.

Great for handling but you have to consider your usage and if it's worth the cost. I reset my alignment to the full conservative side of the SRT spec variance as a compromise and I didn't notice any degradation of cornering ability.

Re: 13k yokos

Thank you for the reply. The dealer said the reads were worn evenly and the fronts are very cupped..... They're the ones who keep telling me it is aligned correctly. How did you get the alignment tweaked?

Re: 13k yokos

It may very well be aligned correctly.... for the track. How much time do you spend on the track?

Look at this 2014 chart and in particular, the left and right camber. I set mine at about -0.80 left and -1.10 right, closer to the LH Drive Aero but within the SRT variance (+/- 0.55).

The variance left to right is to compensate for road crown.

So don't ask them if it's OK, tell them what you want.

Re: 13k yokos

Time spent on track = 0 and I've told them that many times. Thank you very much for your help. I'll call them today and see what can be done. That chart is great too!

What sort of tire life are you getting and what are you running? How did you choose those numbers to run?

Re: 13k yokos

The numbers are from the official 2014 Jeep/Tech Authority DVD Service Manual.

I can't tell you about my mileage experience because I just bought my SRT which came with brand new Pirellis. Curious as to why tires with a UTQG of 520 of couldn't last more than 19,000 miles led me to the aggressive factory alignment as the cause. Seeing others on this forum complain of inside edge wear confirmed it as did a FLIR temperature image. Hot inside edge after straight highway driving.

Nothing wrong with the factory alignment if it fits your usage, (not being a daily driver) and I'm sure I lost a few tenths of a G cornering, but for my driving style I can't tell any difference.

Getting another 5 or 7k out of an expensive set of tires works for me. I suppose it helps I that I use a different car on the track.

Exactly.

There is nothing unique about an SRT that causes it to burn tires except the factory set alignment. It has a purpose, just not for every use case.

Re: 13k yokos

I believe toe-in is what chews up tires much worse than camber.

Regarding factory settings, the toe spec is the same for all Grand Cherokees. It's the camber that's SRT specific.

Of course if the toe is set incorrectly it will certainly eat a tire as well.
