Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 - MSRP Pricing

I found the pricing analysis that Jeep must of been using to justify the new $56k base MSRP.

I'm trying, but no luck. Was told by end of the week, we'll see...

What really blew me away at Toyota was when I went to the dealership to order the Prius they were able to give me pricing on the spot!!! Imagine that!

Yes, but the Prius is not a new vehicle, just announced, like the Jeep!

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 - MSRP Pricing

Can someone explain to me why US buyers feel it's ok, or a "right", to be able to buy at "invoice" or "employee" pricing?

I've read a little on this subject, and from an outsider's perspective it seems to be one of the big reasons the big 3 got themsleves into trouble, they and their dealers simply weren't making enough profit.

Other manufacturers such as the VW Group (meaning Audi too) are actually supplying the USA with vehicles built using lower quality/cheaper materials (interiors in particular) than they sell elsewhere in the world. They do this in an effort to actually make some money.

Jeep built the original WJ and WK's in Europe for the export markets, and used higher quality build and parts in some areas. I wonder if the countries accustomed to these builds will be suprised by US build quality going forward (although I doubt this given the initial WK2 quality I've seen).

I'm interested to hear a perspective from you guys.

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 - MSRP Pricing

^Right or wrong, we've been edumacated through the years to view US invoice as a fair cost plus adequate margin threshold, particularly with holdbacks and other dealer incentives.

IMO, the Big 3 got in trouble first, by building crappy product, and second by having a bloated cost structure. Financing incentives, rebates, and whatnot were just transparent means to sell poor product.

I was an import owner and driver for most of my car driving life for these reasons. Again, JMO, flame on.

Dealer "invoice" is not what the dealer actually pays for the car. Each vehicle has reserve or holdback money built into the invoice price, which the invoicing dealer receives after the vehicle is sold. Any dealer with a respectable sales volume can make a nice profit "invoicing" cars all day, every day. In addition to the holdback, there are dealer incentives on individual vehicles, volume incentives, reserve on financing, etc. to bolster profitability.

Thank you squire.

I don't think you'll be flamed for that however, not by any rational person anyway.....

And yes, i completely understand the "bloated cost structure"..... I've read there was some fairly amazingly bad decisions made by GM many moons ago in relation to worker's entitlements.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!! Thank you! Now I understand!
I was under the assumption "invoice' meant real cost, and their only profit would come from servicing and selling extra add ons (what i call the "Ming Mole" - do you guys have Ming over there? It's paint & fabric protection and other snake oils and there's always a "good" lookin chick there to sell it to you)

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 - MSRP Pricing

Employee pricing is always still well above COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) so it doesn't matter. It is a perk they extend to their employees and it is what it is. They don't have to offer it, they chose to. It's how they retain their employees too...

ORDER UPDATE: My guy said that mine is being built on the 29th. I didn't talk to him directly it was through his nephew, so I didn't get a VIN # yet (still!!) and for all I know it hasn't been assigned. But for some reason he seemed confident it would be built on the 29th, so we'll see!
