Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a GO!

I've owned a few Jeeps over the years and you'll not find anyone more loyal to the brand. I'd still like to see either better engines or lighter curb weights in the newer Jeeps. Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a GO!

Guess I just can't help myself. Between riding my high horse and posting while only half awake, my inner troll just gets the better of me.

What does it have to do with the 2012 SRT8? Well if there is going to be one, lets hope it is lighter than the current WK2 versions and powered by an engine with more hp/torque than the current SRT8s.

Yeah well unfortunately weight gain is a trend not confined to only the Jeep brand.
Seldom does any new vehicle come in under the kerb weight of its predecessor, excluding exotic cars that have the price to match the exotic weight saving material.
In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of a recent new mainstream vehicle model that has achieved it, other than the 370Z (even thats a bit of a cheat because it bucks the trend and is a little smaller than the 350).

The fact is, improvements in crash safety, customer expectations in NVH, and additional equipement, all transpire to weight increases, and that is before we mention that each new model seems to get bigger and bigger!

Red face Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a GO!

I think someone already posted this but in terms of other SUV's in the same category and class - the Jeep is bean pole thin. I have owned 7 Jeeps over the last 20 years - just got rid of my 06 SRT8 2 years ago - looking to get a 2012 (if , when, blah blah).

I did purchase a 2010 Land Rover LR4 - sweet ride but you want to talk about heft? I was crawling around underneath and it is like a sherman tank under there. There are these two huge pendulum looking things in the rear that swing back and forth with the vehicle (they look like 25lb plates) There is a 5 foot long 3 feet around air tank that goes down the passenger side on top of so much steel and other things - lots of stuff.

I also have an 01 Land Rover Discovery - same deal - its a tank. Land Rover's are the first vehicle I have owned that if you let them sit over a long weekend - the tires get flat spotted, every time and they need to work themselves back into round a few miles down the road.

All Jeeps are beyond lightweight when compared with these other classes - the ZJ, WJ and WK all flew with a V8. The SRT8 was beyond lightweight - hence great performance and handling.

My 10 LR4 has the new Jag motor at about 400hp/400tq give or take - the performance is good - but it will never be on par with the Jeep in terms of all out raw acceleration. Plus there is less drama - its butter smooth and dead quiet.

Anyway just a comparison.

PS - the new Jeep SRT8 is coming, just be patient.

Exactly. However, it seems that the current crop of engineers is losing sight of that fact and the only real excuse they have is that all the competition is equally bloated. That is IMnotsoHO not a good thing regardless of how they chose to spin it.

Is your 10 LR4 prone to more time in the shop than on the road like previous LR models? I think the Jeep takes it in that category as well, though some people on here have had horror stories with their WK's.

I keep hearing it was around 90% complete before they pulled the plug on it. Of course I have not been able to confirm anything at this time.

Actually it has not been that bad - and by not that bad nothing really except for a routine 7500 mile check. However at the 7500 there was a "software update" for the radio and some other minor things (seat memory, windows one touch etc.) So when they downloaded the update - they locked up the radio - completely and had to replace No real big deal on my end except they kept the car overnight vs me picking up that day.

Otherwise no issues and we have put plenty of trips on it. My 01 Disco II has 205,000 miles on it - still going and only one head gasket fix and other minor things so not to bad on that either. They are engineered well and built to last - but yes I agree there were years and and overall image of Land Rover in general that they are poor quality and full of issues.

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a GO!

I spoke to my local dealer today (largest one in western Canada), I was told it will be a 6.4L and it will be around 500HP+ and would be released some time next late summer. I asked the sales manager and he said he has spoken to Chrysler for this info. I told him I wanted to trade in my WK2 Overland when the SRT8 is out, he said I am the second guy on the list for my city so I will be one of the first to know. As soon as he has more info I will know and so will you guys!
