First, no issues or bugs with my first gen WK2. Many have experienced the same. Great vehicle all around.

Second, the 5 speed is well suited to the 5.7L, no need here for more gears. I'm getting 19ish hwy at altitude and drive fast.

Third, seems a bit incongruent to seek a 7 speed for a rig sporting a TRACK setting, eh?

Re: 2012 or 2013 SRT8???

Could the difference in trannies be due to tow ratings?
I'd rather have a bullet proof 5 speed than a constantly shifting new x-speed.

It'll definitely be strong enough. Otherwise the first WOT it will be shredded to pieces, LOL

My bet is the current Hemi uses the 545RFE for improved EPA mileage numbers. With the 2 overdrives and the multispeed technology to assist in passing and towing it gives them the flexibility you don't get with a straight 5 speed. It's also the package they use in the RAM trucks so it's probably easier and more cost effective to simply transplant it. The SRT8 OTOH used the Merc trans in it's last incarnation and I suspect it's a better match for things such as the paddle shift.

Just my guesses but you asked

I have been told the 8 speed will never be in the SRT line up from a good source. BUT....Milous is the BEST source....so I tend to go with what he says.

Yeah I'm sorry about that, I gave you a bum steer there mate.
I must have "read" that in a drunken stupor. lol

*** I still don't think you'll see the 8 speed in the SRT8.

And further to other parts of the conversation, I think new gearboxes all round are a requirement, not so much for all the extra gears, but rather newer tech, better shift quality, and for SRT8, the ability to "blip" match the revs on downshifts when in flappy paddle sport mode. THAT, I want!!!!!

At some point they WILL replace the current 5-speed...

Currently, Chrysler is sourcing the transmissions from ZF, and they are in somewhat short supply - that's why you are only seeing them in a couple of models this year (V6 Charger and V6 300). In fact, just a couple days ago Chrysler temporarily closed the order banks for the 8-speed models as initial orders were exceeding capacity.

Chrysler will spend $300 million to retool two Indiana plants to build the new transmission, but production won't start until calendar year 2013. They will continue to source them until that time. If supplies are good a year from now you will see them in the 2013 Grand Cherokee.
