dealerships are notorious for wrenching the shit out of oil filters. My father-in-law has to continuously tell them to chill out on his WK Laredo as they tighten it too much, which crushes the o-ring over time and it loses its seal.

Needs to be put on looser. Over-tightening.
Can't leave it to lose or it will probably unscrew from vibration and fall off.
So after the gasket contacts the oil filter base, how tight should it go? I have tried 3/4 - 1 turn and the filter always leaks. I have to keep tightening over the next few days till it stops leaking. PITA. Its awfully strange since I've only had this problem with Mopar vehicles with V8's, 3 with the 5.7 and one with the 4.7 engines. And yes I've tried the Mopar filters but I have more luck getting the leak stopped sooner with a Purolator Pure One filter.

I've been using them for over a dozen years without a single issue ever. I assume you are cleaning the mounting surface and also putting a little oil on the gasket ahead of installation?

Re: 2014 SRT oil change...

the filter is different from 06-07 to 08'-14' maybe they are putting the 06-07 filter on there? Is it even possible?

I kinda have to side with Milous on this one. If an OEM filter has issues it was usually corrected ASAP regardless of manufacturer. It is there own guarantee against engine failure and since they all have longer warranties can't see this.

On the other hand every dealership service department I worked with would have problems with the young dudes they hired to do the oil changes. Too tight too loose (forgot to put it on, that was always messy). Biggest problem though was cleaning before mounting and a little lubricant on that gasket. Single grain of sand in any gasket and dry will start a leak eventually no matter how tight it is IMHO.

I always asked for the white haired guy who looked like he was near retirement, always took 10 minutes longer but he never missed anything.

Thanks. Yes I wipe the filter base clean and apply some fresh oil to the gasket prior to installing it on engine. I would try only tightening 3/4 of a turn after gasket touches the base but worry it will loosen and fall off.

I have had 3 failures so far. I don't know what the main problem is. All filter related.

Re: 2014 SRT oil change...

Just performed my first oil change on my '14 last week at 1200 miles. The filter could only be removed by piercing it (and dripping oil everywhere :-/) to get a better grip. The culprit was a dry seal. In fact, it remained glued to the car after the old filter was removed. The dopes building our cars definitely torque them on too tightly and do not appear to apply oil on the ring.
