How does the black backing plate come off to remove the factory emblem? Looks like there are two pieces that secure into the liftgate?

OK, bad news from the world of Mopar. We emailed Mopar Specifying about the part number for the Black Altitude Grill Rings and they gave us this response.

"Ring kit 68241344AA is used for paint to match, thank you for contacting
MOPAR specifying."

So my is guess Mopar wants people to get the more expensive "Platinum" version of the grill rings and then pay to have them painted the color they want.

I am passing along info from 5.7summit - as I had the same question.

The entire Jeep emblem is one piece - so you have to 'peel' off the chrome emblem just like the rest of the emblems. As it is recessed I used a combo of goo-off and WD-40 to loosing the glue - followed by hairdryer and an older credit card to work the double sided tape. BE CAREFUL not to scratch the paint and clean up the excess solvent that runs down (I keep a bucket of soapy water to clean it off quickly. Took me about 10 minutes of prying/solvent and heat to get it off - along with a small plastic pry bar - the whole thing pops off.

Then you have to work all that old doublestick tape off and that take patience - but once cleaned off - you are good to re-apply the new one

I love the lack of the big chrome piece on the rear - my wife says it looks too secret - but I think the black on black is perfect

*see what did you do to your WK2* string for pics

Good luck

Thanks! I got it figured out last week, didn't take long to get the emblem off for me since my car was about a month old at the time, just heated it up a bit and got an edge up and it came off easy, barely any residue to clean off at all. Love the way it looks now I just need the OEM black SRT badge when it is released on the "red" edition or whatever they are going to call it.

That's horrible news. I can't imagine why they would do this as it seems it would be more costly for them but i digress...hopefully it turns out differently....

Thank you just for jeeps for looking into this, so if I owned an altitude and had the rings damaged where I would need to replace, I would have to buy the $344 msrp primer color ring and have them painted. Mopar can suck on a big cork, after I plasti dip it.
