6290 mile road trip through 14 states

My wife and I just returned from a 6 week, 6290 mile road trip through 14 states. The first leg was from central PA to Phoenix AZ, where we met four relatives and friends from South Africa who rented two Harleys. We followed them to Las Vegas and together did all the usual tourist stops including the WigWam Motel, the Impact Crater, the Grand Canyon, the red rocks of Sedona, portions of Route 66, and on to Vegas for 5 days. The others then went on to California while my wife and I headed back east via Utah, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri where we stopped to visit our son. But since this is a Jeep forum, not a travel site, I thought Iíd offer a few comments on my 2012 SRT8, now with 15,700 miles.

This is one fantastic vehicle. Iíve owned all four generations of the Grand Cherokee, and this is by far the best build quality. Not a single clunk, rattle or squeak on the entire trip. And the ride, suspension and comfort are fantastic. I drove on all types of roads....twisty and hilly to and from Sedona, and dead straight for miles through AZ, NV and UT. My wife doesnít drive, so I drove every single mile myself. The seats are firm but comfortable, and I never got a sore back or fatigue. All the controls and instruments are easy to read and reach. Iíve now tried all the settings and features, and havenít found one I donít like. One trivial complaint: There is no convenient place to throw loose change...the cup holders are too deep to fish out coins.

This was the first real test of my Borla ATAK. It has exactly the sound I was looking for. At normal driving conditions it is only slightly louder than the stock system, but under WOT it really comes alive with a deep roar. We drove through the tunnels of the PA Turnpike with the windows down to get the full effect. Wow!

My beast is Deep Cherry Red, and drew a lot of attention, especially from law enforcement. In Indiana, a trooper stopped me, but fortunately he was a car guy who knew all the specs of the SRT 6.4L and let me off with a warning. Then in Ohio, at 3:00 am, a trooper driving a Charger rolled down his window as I was pumping gas, and we had a nice chat. He showed me all the high tech equipment in his car...itís amazing the technology a cop has to be trained in these days. It was a real eye opener. The only ticket I got on the entire trip was from an automatic camera in a suburb of Phoenix. It was waiting for me when I got home.

Some facts and figures: The 14 states covered were PA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KA, OK, TX, NM, AZ, NV, UT, CO, and then home to PA. My gas consumption with city, highway and high speed Interstate driving averaged 16 mpg. On a long stretch through OH at a steady speed I was able to push it up to 18.3 mpg, but it fell off quickly once I made a few rest and food stops. This is still roughly 2 mpg better than my 2006 SRT8 would get under the same conditions.

I did a few high speed runs on the straight, deserted highways in AZ and NV. On I 40 between Seligman and Kingman, I got well into triple digits before approaching slower traffic. Then a real opportunity came on a long straight portion of Route 93 between Kingman and Vegas. I put the pedal to the floor and watched the mph ratchet up on the speedo. I only lifted my foot so as not to push my luck. Iím a bit hesitant to publish my speed, but for those of you mathematically inclined, if you take Pi and round it off to the nearest whole number, and then multiply by the number of states in the Union, you will have my speed in mph. Itís the fastest I have ever gone in any vehicle. My witness to all this is my wife who was in the passenger seat.

To sum up, Iíve owned a lot of vehicles, but the WK2 SRT8 is the best ever. Admittedly, the sticker price is pretty steep, but I like to think of our Jeep SRT8 as the worldís most reasonably priced supercar.

Thanks guys. It's a bit long but I hope you enjoyed it. Here's another pic. PS: Did any of you do the math on my speed test?

As someone who has an order placed, but hasnt taken delivery yet, I just wanted to thank you for posting this. Helps reaffirm that I made the right decision. Can't wait to get a hold of mine and put it to the test. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to git Pi X # of states, but I can't wait to try!

Re: 6290 mile road trip through 14 states

Nice travels. I was just in Phoenix last week for work, go there twice a year.

The more I see the red over time, I have to say it has grown on me.

3 x 50 (states)...150 MPH.....the question, what was the rate of fuel consumption at that speed?? Short answer, who cares, it was worth it.
