Camera Setup

OK guys sorry if this is in a bad place, but trying to find out what you guys think about buying a camera. I have always had cheap "point and shoot" and usually took decent pics. Now I would like a slightly more "mature" camera for my trips, and would like to dabble into the realm of hobby photography. I know some of you guys are pros, and at least more experienced than me. My real question is this: Is it worth it to get a mid level "mirror less system compact" ? Or should i just spend a little more and get a DSLR? Definitely don't want to go over the 1K mark and would use it for fun and hobby but often due to travel and size matters. Was looking at the Sony NEX 6/7 lineup as a friend has one and it seems cool. But he like me only knows so much on the topic as of yet. Any advice is welcome especially you camera guru's. Please your 2cents is more than i know on the topic.

Re: Camera Setup

I have a Canon DSLR, but find myself taking my Sony RX100 with me all the time. It is very compact and for me makes more sense as a travel and everyday camera.

Re: Camera Setup

I just bought the Olympus TG-3

Going to Cancun next week and will use it snorkeling and quit taking pics with my
blackberry.

Has a slick new feature, focal stacking. It can snap a few pics in different focal points
then blend the photos for 1 without all the out focus areas.

No pro here nor is the cam a dslr but @ 16mp it takes a fine shot as well as 240fps video in the 320 dpi mode. Its 1080 @ 30fps

I needed something I can beat up easily that has dual image stabilization.
