Four is the new three, as in $4 and 40 highway miles per gallon. But come hell or high gas prices, there will always be hot cars, mighty trucks, and a privileged few who don’t sweat $100 fill-ups as long as the passing lane remains open for business.

Back from some engineering R & R, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 lives for express-lane service. Like the rest of the Cherokee nation, it rolls on a new platform that began life as a Benz but was nurtured by a Chrysler team with a name that says it all. Good luck convincing apprehending officers that the SRT badge on the back of this Jeep stands for Slow, Reserved, and Timid, rather than Street and Racing Technology.

Inflation Affects Us All

The second-gen version of the Jeep with the nerve to taunt the world’s premium SUVs unfortunately suffers from another type of inflation unrelated to its estimated $50,000 base price. As if air nozzles were jammed up its exhaust pipes, the new SRT8’s walls are bowed out 3.8 inches, the roof towers 2.4 inches higher, and the wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than its 2006–10 predecessor’s. Fashionably clipped overhangs do result in a 3.7-inch-shorter overall length, though.










Inside, the architectural changes net a modest gain in front-seat travel, 3.1 inches of additional rear legroom, and a touch more cargo space. In keeping with Chrysler’s current interior-upgrade initiative, the SRT8’s cabin received a rich overlay of (optional) French-stitched leather and suede, genuine carbon-fiber trim, and elegantly polished metal-look accents. Navigation displayed on a 6.5-inch, tilting touch screen with a media hard drive is standard, as are an MP3 playback function and auxiliary media connections. To provide more storage space in the center console, the parking brake moves from hand to foot operation.

Since curb weight is up nearly a quarter-ton over the 2010 SRT8 that finished third behind BMW’s X5 M and Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S and ahead of Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport Supercharged in our January 2010 comparo, the SRT sorcerers had their work cut out upgrading the hardware. A significantly stiffer body structure and a new independent rear suspension provide an excellent foundation. To fight the extra weight, the faithful Hemi V-8 has been muscled up with larger bore and stroke dimensions yielding 6.4 liters, 50 additional horsepower (470 at 6000 rpm), and 45 more pound-feet of torque (now 465 at 4300 rpm). One carry-over is an anachronistic five-speed automatic, at least blessed with thumb-sized, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. (Be patient, SRT8 fans: Chrysler has an eight-speed autobox coming soon.)










What’s now called “Fuel Saver Technology” (formerly Multi-Displacement System) allows the Hemi to cruise on only four firing cylinders, signaled by an “eco” lamp in the instrument cluster. It works at speeds of up to 82 mph and, along with slightly taller gearing, helps to boost the SRT8’s EPA highway-mileage rating from 16 mpg to an estimated 18.

Quadra-Trac and Selec-Trac for the Race-Trac

The SRT gang dipped heavily into Fiat’s engineering budget for premium chassis and powertrain components. The electronically controlled Quadra-Trac transfer case automatically adjusts the amount of torque delivered to the front axle to maximize available traction. The limited-slip rear differential is also processor-managed. Massive Brembo calipers grip 15.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear brake rotors, while adaptive Bilstein dampers do a superior job of managing body motions without trashing the ride.

A console-mounted Selec-Trac master knob commands the damping, stability control, torque distribution, shift strategy, throttle response, and cylinder deactivation according to the driver’s choice of five settings: auto, sport, track, tow, and snow. To facilitate expeditious marine ops, a Class IV receiver hitch and appropriate trailer wiring are now offered as a factory option. Also worth playing with is a menu of “performance pages” in the info center, which is located between the tach and speedometer. The system is capable of displaying a whole road test’s worth of numbers—various acceleration figures, braking distance, cornering and braking g—plus oil pressure and temperature, transmission temp, and engine hours.

The most notable options are a dual-panel sunroof; an 825-watt, 20-speaker Harman/ Kardon sound system; and a DVD entertainment system packaged with a single-pane sunroof. There are two tire choices: Pirelli Scorpion Verde all-season rubber is standard; Pirelli P Zero summer tires are optional. Both are 295/45ZR-20 run-flats. As was the case with the first-generation SRT8, a one-day visit to the Richard Petty Racing School is included in the price.

Softer, but not Soft

Compared with the hunkered and ready 2010 SRT8, this edition appears to suffer from bloat. More-massive proportions, tall-sidewall rubber, and a less distinctive face have softened the cleanly chiseled Grand Cherokee that had the chutzpah to run with $150,000 SUVs. The view from the driver’s seat, past thick A- and D-pillars and oversize rearview mirrors, reinforces the notion that you’re swaddled in XXL attire.










Also softened: the Hemi’s raspy gurgle, which is now a throaty but more subdued hum. When the eco light glows to indicate that four-cylinder frugality is afoot, the exhaust note becomes a flat buzz.

The good stuff happens when you leg the throttle and toggle the too-small left shift paddle to drop a gear or three. The Hemi hurtles the SRT8 forward like a shot put. The run to 60 should take 4.8 seconds while the quarter-mile blitz will last about 13.5. It’s a touch slower than the ’10 SRT8 we tested but still quick enough to beat top-dog SUVs from Acura, Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Lincoln, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz. (Note to self: Steer clear of the twin-turbo kings, BMW and Porsche, at stoplights.) The wind calls a halt to the fun at a felonious 157 mph.

For such a big guy, the SRT8 also knows how to bob and weave with finesse. The steering is quick and decisive, though lacking feel. Suede seat inserts do a superb job of keeping front occupants from bouncing off the door panels during transient maneuvers. The brake pedal is reassuringly stiff underfoot, and the Brembos, collaborating with highly capable P Zero radials, halt this heavyweight immediately.

One glaring flaw is less-than-perfect gauge visibility from an outfit that usually excels in this critical design area. The combination of lenses and tunnels containing the SRT8’s speedo and tach, gratuitous calibrations to 180 mph and 8000 rpm, and the shadow cast by the thick-section steering wheel rim frustrate a quick read of road- and engine-speed information. The Grand Cherokee’s new creature comforts—such as rear-seat backrests adjustable through nine positions, storage pockets galore, and a vastly improved ride—are endearing, though not exactly what we expect from the SRT asylum. Nor are we convinced that a smoother glide, a more luxurious interior, and a move up to the 5000-pound weight class are appropriate missions for this team. We prefer a more throwback interpretation of the sacred SRT hieroglyphic: Slightly Raw but always Tantalizing wheels for the lords of the left lane.

Little more harsh than the inside line one if you ask me. They really can make things seem a lot worse/negative than they are. And then people tend to follow crowds so I can kinda see a pattern developing here. Wonder how they will sell in the short future? Seems the article are all quoting this $54k base price, but I swore Milous quoted the $43k base. Im guessing the $54k is fully loaded? Beyond that combined with the heavier ride and ultimately slower acceleration numbers, lots of people may shy away.

Really I think they have a point (not necessarily one I would agree with, but a point nonetheless) in that they sohuld have stuck to the aggressive, less refined, more raspy and raw style/feeling SRT8 Jeep. I mean SRT does stand for street/racing technology and from that it seems the main focus of the model would be street/track racing/performance aka cutting weight/adding power/tuning suspension and keeping the inside simple and functional. Im not sure where they really picked up weight but I think it was unavoidable with all the fancy driveline/suspension stuff plus the more rigid chassis.

Anyway this is the first second generation we've had so until people really get these in their hands and we see the WK an d WK2 side by side a bunch of times, its gonna be hard to say which is better. I think this one because in short, I like a nicer interior and a more fun motor/suspension, but many others like it raw. If it doesn't sell well than great! The more for us I guess, it will at least give us great bargaining room come time to grab one off a lot at least haha

In the automotive industry, the harshest critics are the most well-received. I don't know why, but it's like that in the news industry too. It's like those who care need to justify "they were right" in whatever category it may be. Take for example our beloved Jeep SRT8. Their job is not to praise it, that already happens. Their job is to give Jeep (and SRT) the reality check they deserve, because nobody else (who is visible enough) will. This increases readership loyalty because it is them "telling it like it is" - even though we all know these guys do exaggerate regardless...

And they SHOULD be critical of Jeep and SRT right now because this potential price tag of $60K reeeeeally deserves some crutiny. In fact, I'm surprised none of them HAVE commented on the price - this tells me this is just purely their estimate and NOT the actual price.

Again, these guys are likely getting a loaded Jeep at $55K and saying that is the price and the people writing this article likely don't even have a clue what this thing costs or what options or price changes it could incur...

Actually, some of them have commented on the price and call it a bargain by comparing it to the BMW and Porsche top end SUV's. The only problem, it's a Jeep and until I get 4 years scheduled maintenance, free loaner car service, dealerships that don't make me feel like I need to take a bath after I leave and resale that justifies the price I don't think a 60K Jeep is in my future.

I think the msrp of the "tested vehicles" was $55k...maybe? Anyway...compare the Jeep SRT to any other HIGH PERFORMANCE SUV...and then get back to me on the price! Half the price of a Cayenne turbo S($123,000 at a local dealer) or even a Cayenne S with similar options($89K at a local dealer) No idea about the BMW X5M.....LOL

Even though the pricing is not Exactly what we thought it should be...its still a bargain as noted above. IMO of course.
