Coolant temps

Hey fellas. Quick question. Today on the highway after being stuck in some traffic my coolant temp went way up! I have a 180 degree tstat and it's always kept everything cool. But today after having it in paddle shift mode I laid into her and a warning came up saying coolant temp too high. Soon as I backed off her the temp dropped. So whatever. I just got home from dinner and on the way I wanted to see if it was still acting up... beat on her a tiny bit and my coolant temp is at like 222-226. And the fans are coming on. Don't remember ever having this issue. Anyone else ever? Let me know. Thanks guys

Re: Coolant temps

Thermos go bad, even the expensive ones. It could be getting stuck and not opening fully, cracked, etc...
Then again, keep an eye on your coolant bc lines have been known to fail.

Re: Coolant temps

i've seen people drill small 1/8" holes in the thermostats for coolant bypass in them normally helps them open and helps with air pockets. BUT most Highend thermostats have this feature already.

I had even the Stock thermostat fail open in the winter... burrrr

Re: Coolant temps

Agree...conventional wisdom says stats will fail in the open position. Just changed out both stats on my Cummins 370s in my boat...after everyone said "how could two separate stats in two engines fail at the same time...impossible.." Guess what...
They actually restrict after awhile, losing their ability to open fully. Just like in boat engines, they will show their weakness under load.
Don't be afraid to throw a IR gun at the stat housing and sensor to be sure all is reading properly as well.

Re: Coolant temps

@phillysrt same exact symptoms I had last winter/spring. Just replace the tstat and you'll be back to normal.

Hopefully they are using a Vacuum Bleeder, These things can be a PITA to bleed.
