Dealer Window Tint ?

As I'm shopping on line for my new 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I'm noticing most every dealer has in the fine print at the bottom of the page:

"Price does not include tax and license, docking fees, window tint, etc."

Are dealers taking it upon themselves to tint windows on new vehicles before they introduce them for sale on their lot or showroom? I ask because most of them I've looked at on line seem to have very dark windows. Much darker than one would think they're shipped from the factory with. I'm not against this, as living in the desert southwest window tint is all but a requirement. I just would like the choice at the time of purchase. Not have it made for me by the dealer to tack on a quick buck, like it or not.

The advantages are not having to shop, and line up a tint job after the purchase. And the fact the dealer would have to provide some type of respectable warranty on the job. The disadvantages would be a most certain higher cost, (like most everything else available from the dealer), and not being able to choose the degree of tint. The latter is important, because in some locales the darkness of the tint is limited by law enforcement. If they feel it's too dark, you can be forced to remove it, or else receive a citation.... Or both.

The reason I haven't asked any dealers this is because I'm not going to be ready to buy until the end of the month. Once I contact them about anything regarding a new vehicle purchase, I know full well I'm going to get bombarded with correspondence and questions. Right now you can't look at any dealers inventory without someone popping up within 15 seconds asking, "May I help you find a new vehicle?"

For you guys that have purchased new Grand Cherokee's, what has your experience been with dealer applied window tinting? If it was dealer installed, what was the cost? A Grand Cherokee has a lot of glass.

Re: Dealer Window Tint ?

All of the rear windows (rear passenger doors and back) come factory tinted. About 18 - 20%.

Front windows are not tinted (well they are but they appear clear to your eye... If using a meter the fronts will test out at about 85 - 90% transmission).

I searched far and wide for our SRT back in December from Texas to Minnesota to South Florida. I found many that offered the fronts tinted and many that did not.

The amount / percentage of tint applied appeared to run right along with the local laws... 35% in Georgia, Bama and Florida as an example. I cant remember the state / dealer but did find ONE that was installing tint to match the rear windows (20%).

I was specifically looking to ORDER our new Jeep so I didn't ask many questions about what they had on the lot from most of the dealers but did find one out in Omaha (I think) that had exactly what I wanted, on the lot, but front windows already tinted. Dealer did not waste any time saying they would happily strip it off if I did not like it.

The costs I found were actually really good and comparable to what it would cost to go get them done yourself. Keep in mind most dealers are going to contract most of the work out to only a few shops so those shops give them a huge discount for the volume. Allows the dealer to make a profit on it and still sell it for a comparable amount.

One family member of mine uses the tint option as a bargaining factor. He will get the vehicle price down to what he thinks is fair and then, at the very last, he says "throw in some lifetime window tinting and you got a deal". It has always worked out great for him (which probably means he left some $$ on the table in the price negotiation if the dealer jumped on it that fast but hey, whatever).

For me, I did NOT want it done from the dealer. Not for cost but because I am VERY picky when it comes to tint quality. Both the quality / warranty of the film but also the quality of the install. While the dealer may offer a warranty, that's just a hassle I don't want. I would much rather get the best of the best out there and be certain I am not going to be looking at bubbles or hairs under the tint for years and know the chance is VERY slim that I will ever have problems with it. And if I do, the tint shop will fix it and I don't have to deal with the dealer.

As a result I paid more to get my front windows tinted than any of the dealers were trying to sell that "option" for. But it was the best tint job I have ever had and the warranty allows me to go to ANY tint shop selling Llumar tint for any tint warranty issues for the life of the vehicle.

Re: Dealer Window Tint ?

I'm with you on wanting "The best of the best". However, I don't know enough about tint to decipher a good job from a bad one. With the exception of course on how long it lasts. I don't even know what the best tint is. This scares me because I could easily be sold a bill of goods. I had my truck tinted back in 1991, and the guy did a hell of a good job. But I lucked out and fell into it.

So for a guy like me, buying a tint job from a reputable dealer might not be such a bad idea, rather than taking a stab at, "Joe's Window Tinting". Does anyone happen to know what the max percentage of tint that is allowed in Arizona?

Re: Dealer Window Tint ?

Not a bad idea at all.

Looks like 33% up front, any % in back.

Thanks! That tint law site is a big help. I didn't know I could go that dark.
