Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

I'm terrible at searching... Where is the crimped/crushed exhaust pipe section on the 12/13s? I was curious if the 14 had the same or not. I crawled around underneath and didn't notice it.

...but I could be looking in all the wrong places

Right where the big center muffler connects to the pipe

Re: Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

Ahh - there it is... front passenger side on the inside of the pipe. I was looking from the passenger side earlier thinking the crimp was on the bottom and just missed it.

And, seeing it in person really makes me wonder WTF? There has to be a reason they did it, but seriously, that is a major clamp down...

Re: Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

there is a bolt that they can't get to so they pinched the pipe to be able to get to the bolt. I cut mine out and welded on a true pipe. The pinch is actually almost half the diameter when you look inside the pipe after you cut out the pinch. Jim383 called SRT and they knew about the pinch and told Jim they adjusted flow in the muffler to route exhaust to the other side to compensate

no prob here is some pics I took when I had mine removed. There was a noticeable difference in how it drove, more throttle response and just seemed to run more smooth and had a little more pep.

I can see a shop around the corner from me doing that same thing in the very near future!

Re: Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

That is a nasty crunched pipe!

I wonder if couldn't just take a torch, heat up that area and squeeze it back to mostly round again? Might not be enough meat in the pipe... But it works with Schd 40 and some thinner tubing so might work on this.

Had a natural gas (methane) line leaking under the lawn. Guy with a backhoe came and dug it out. Then a guy with a welding outfit came by. He cuts the plastic wrap off the steel pipe over about a 3ft section. Heats the pipe cherry red upstream of the leak, and squeezes the pipe closed. Yes, with the gas flowing! Then he cuts out the leaky piece, welds in a new piece, heats up the spot he crimped the pipe and rounds it back into shape. Puts away all his torch and stuff. Wraps the pipe with plastic again. Didn't take much longer to do it than to type it up.

Re: Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

Its pretty nasty, that's why I cut it out and replaced it. There is no way it can't make a difference getting rid of that. Never seen a pinch that bad on an exhaust. I'm not sure if that idea will work but you could always have an exhaust shop cut it out and stick it on one of there pipe expanders and open it back up then weld it back in. Might as well just vet a new price though

Re: Exhaust crimp? Seeing if the '14 has it still...

I agree with A.V.GCSRT8 but im leaving mine in and so far my 1st time out in +DA i ran pertty good with 80% humdity and waiting to see if someone does a track test b4 and after the crimp. I was telling A.V.GCSRT8 that the srt guys told me they tuned the exhaust knowing the crimp was there and if you notice theres always more exhaust coming out the driver side than the pasenger side and that was even true on my 07. I will also be waiting to see a WK2 with a cai and 93 canned tune or e mail tune that does a b4 and after with the crimp.

I was wondering about that crimp in the exhaust pipe and now I know why it is there.

Still bugs the crap out of me they did that versus coming up with a more engineered solution. I bet that idea made the bean counters happy.
