EXPORT DRL Mod possible breakthrough

Thanks to HammerTime We may be onto some new findings on how the bumper LED strip and headlight DRL ribbons work on the export models.

I was in the market for one of your harnesses but being impatient among other things I thought I would just run a wire from the fuse to both the drl head light wires (white with yellow and white with dark blue) as a temporary thing until I got a harness. No diodes, relays or anything just soldered a single wire to the fuse and positaped it into each of the drl wires. It worked great except it worked a bit to well. For some reason it works exactly the same as your harnesses. No flicker when I unlock the doors before starting, Headlight DRL LED Ribbons activate to full intensity in ‘Run’ ignition position, Headlight DRL LED Ribbons dim automatically when headlights or parking lights are turned on. Have you heard of this before or do I have a freak jeep on my hands. I cant think of why it worked like this for me. Any thoughts?

This may explain why you guys don't have the bumper DRL strip on at night. The export models may simply cut the power to the DRL circuit to meet export standards. The US model keeps the bumper strips on but dims.

Furthermore this may give you guys the ability to run your bumper strips at night that is normally disabled on exports... We would have to power the DRL circuit in the fusebox at all times instead of the car disabling it.
Export Model Notes:
  • DRL Circuit in fuse box turns off with headlights/parking lights, which explains why you guys don't have the DRL Bumper strips at night
  • You can tap directly from the DRL circuit to your Headlight DRL ribbon wires (pin position 3 in the headlight harnesses) This will also go out once headlights/parking lights are turned on thus dimming your Headlight DRL ribbons for proper night operation **Means there is no need for relay to do this function like US models**
  • It may be possible to allow your bumper strips to run if you can find out how to power the DRL circuit at all times
For any brave soles with export vehicles it may be something to try... Report back if you look into it.

Re: EXPORT DRL Mod possible breakthrough

I might have a crack at this today. I had to remove my DRL mod as the dealer thought it was causing my TPMS issue
I have been meaning to put it back on the car, as it is a direct copy of your harness. I will try out your suggestion first and see the result.
Will post back when done.

Re: EXPORT DRL Mod possible breakthrough

IT WORKS !!!!

I ran a single wire from the White/Yellow and White/Blue directly to the F40 fuse and it works perfectly. Took me all of 5 minutes to do.

Thanks to Hammertime and CLS for their work on this mod.

Just to confirm, with this setup your DRL ribbons go high intensity with headlights off and dims once they are on.

Looks like that F40 fuse (DRL circuit) goes on and off with the headlights on the EXPORT models. Now to figure out how to use this knowledge to get the export bumper strip powered at night...

Yes, If you connect the headlights ribbons to constant power on ignition, they should remain bright at all times. I have not tried that in fear of the computer tripping out so that's why I get power from the fuse box.

The bumper strips are another story as I think they run off of can bus signals but if we can have them powered through the circuit you may be good to go.

Re: EXPORT DRL Mod possible breakthrough

I just PosiTapped (Scotchlocked) a single wire and ran it from the passenger Ribbon to the drivers Ribbon and then directly to the F40 fuse. Remember we are RHD. So the only parts needed are 2m (6ft) of wire and 2 PosiTaps (I used scotchlocks, which are similar and cheaper).

The ribbons do dim when the lights are on, as the LED DRLs turn off.

Re: EXPORT DRL Mod possible breakthrough

If you have the CLS kit, then you should not need to do anything.
I am not sure what your problem and question is.
