Just purchased my new 2012 GC SRT8 this past weekend (mineral gray). New to the forum so go easy on me. Have owned several Jeeps in the past 19 years but drifted away from the brand when I wasn't happy with the build quality on my 2005 Grand Cherokee. Since 2005 I've owned 2 BMW X5s (hated them - wanted to like them but never really did), a Porsche Cayenne S (loved this vehicle but maintenance was extremely costly), and most recently I've spent time owning a 2010 Audi S4 (which I heavily modded and was a blast of a vehicle to drive).
The only problem with Audis is once the mileage gets up there, the DSG dual clutch transmission and electronic gremlins start to kick in. Audi's policy on modded vehicles is to start flat out denying powertrain warranties. I knew it was time to ditch my Audi and move on. I new I needed to go back to a SUV given the family, two dogs, etc - but wanted to maintain the sportiness of the Audi but functionality of a SUV. The SRT8 seem to be the perfect vehicle at the right price point. I was able to pick this one up for about 1% below invoice on Long Island.
So far driving impressions, I love it. It's very smooth when you want it to be but can be an animal when you get on it. I forgot how much I missed the raw sound of the V8 exhaust coming from the Supercharged 3.0 Audi. Obviously it's not as fast as my Audi (which ran low 4's 0-60 and low 12s in the 1/4 mile). But you can really toss this thing around and it feels like it can just keep taking more. I know I haven't even scratched the surface yet as I am still in the break-in period. So trying to keep my foot off the accelerator...
A couple of negatives I have already noticed. Front bumper apron already is popping out on the passenger right side. I know this seems to be a common problem. Called the SRT8 hotline today to complain and ensure they record that my VIN is one of the vehicles with this problem. They stated a fix is in the works (meaning a new clip needs to be designed). Some dealers are trying to fix them by realigning or pushing it back in but utlimately they will just pop out again. I was asked to be notified once the offical fix was developed. Please let me know if you've successfully been able to fix this. The other problem I noticed was a piece of the carbon fiber trim where the start button doesn't seem to be completely glued or clipped on properly. The lower portion of it isn't attached. Last of all - got in the car this morning and for some reason the PSI warning came on stating my driver front tire was low (24 psi). Don't know if I had a slow leak or the dealer never really checked it when it was delivered. I put air into it and will check it to see it it continues. That's all I need is to find out I got a slow leak from somewhere. Also had a freak issue where the radio just stopped working. Don't know if I went back and forth between HDD or my Iphone too fast or what. It seemed to just freeze (no sound coming out of the speakers). Turned engine off for a few minutes and turned back on - everything seemed fine. Again - not sure but would appreciate feedback if anyone else has experienced this.
Here's a few pictures to share - first is the S4 I parted with to get this vehicle along with pics of my new Jeep (sorry about the crappy Iphone pictures on the Jeep). I will probably hold off on any mods for now - at least for a little bit.
