Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

I had a similar problem, but it was dust between the laminations.
Could only be seen whent he sun was at the right angle. I managed to replicate it with a bright torch held on a similar angle as the sun was hitting the screen.
The dealer saw it straight away when shown with the right light at the right angle.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

A long time ago my ex borrowed my car... When she came back later she was spitting feathers and asked why there were 2 smallish foot prints on the inside front glass of the passenger seat.... Well thinking quickly I said my mate had put his feet up there after the beach, to which she replied. I don't think so as the prints were about 4 feet apart!! Needless to say I was busted. But very worth it....

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

I have a hand print on my windshield, too. On the passenger side. Shows up when the sun is near the horizon in mornings/evenings. Been there since I bought it back in December and didn't much of it when I first saw it, but then went I finally got around to trying to clean it off (was not in any hurry due to winter weather), discovered that I couldn't remove it.

I'm finally taking it in to the dealer on Thursday for them to take a look.

I've tried cleaning with acetone , bon-ami (both recommended for severe glass cleaning), etc. It does not come off. I'm convinced it's etched into the glass somehow. If it's between the layers, what the heck is going on at the windshield plant?

I talked to the dealer yesterday about it. They said Chrysler requires the dealer to take pics and and send them to Chrysler which the service manager will do. Chrysler supposedly gets to have the say in windshield replacements regarding defects, not the dealer. I told them the hand is hard to see; need just the right light, and that I have pics, but they're welcome to try to take their own.

I found this thread because I did a search for "windshield" since I remember somebody posted a pic of some strange streaks that they're windshield has. Beside the handprint, mine also has these same streaks so I want to print out their picture to show the dealer, "see! not just mine!".
Windshield streaks

Suffice it to say... besides the hand print, and the streaks, I'm wanting a new windshield. Getting really annoying now that Winter is over and the sun is out so much more.

Will post pics later.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

Who makes the glass for Chrysler? Ford has its own factory, and I've always been impressed with the quality of their glass.

Some pics...

These two were taken in the garage with the lights off and flashlight aimed at windshield. About the only way I can see it in the garage...

In sunlight. Camera doesn't pic it up too well. The hand is much "brighter" in person...

Besides the hand prints, this one below also shows a couple of the 'streaks' i mentioned. All the curved streaks sweeping from top left to bottom right is just dirt from the windshield wiper. But the ones going from bottom left to top right are streaks that, as far as i can tell, are between the layers of glass. This is the passenger side; it's much worse on the driver's side...

I have the exact same thing, only mine are just passenger side only. From inside the streaks go lower left to upper right, the exact opposite of the windshield wiper path, so no way that was the problem. It almost looks like someone took a cloth and wiped in an arc like fashion.

Anyway, I dropped the Jeep off at the dealer today for another issue (transmission) and I showed it to them. I'll see what happens, but I really think it' between the lamination layers as you cant' feel it at all on the inside or out, but it looks like it's rough so you should feel it.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

Update: Dealer has confirmed the streaks/swipes are inside the layers of the glass. A new windshield has been ordered and will be installed under warranty. I also confirm that the dealer must take pictures of it and send it to Chryco to get approval of replacement, that's what they told me happened.

So there is obviously and issue with the glass manufacturer with a batch/batches of the windshields. Anyone who has this, get it replaced under warranty.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

That's amazing. You'd think a glass factory would have better quality assurance procedures than to have a bunch of lackeys running around putting their bare, dirty hands on stuff being made.

Well, they sure as hell are going to pay for it now. Guaranteed the glass supplier is getting charged for all the replacements.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

That's exactly right. And the cost to replace a windshield far exceeds the initial profit made when they sold the first one. These kind of stupid mistakes destroy manufacturers.

Re: Hand Prints on Windshield

I've been to the dealer and they can't see anything and said they would clean it really good. It didn't work. I'm going to try to get a black light and see if I can get a good picture that way. It is getting more annoying every day now that it is getting nicer out and I just want it fixed. I'm actually going in the morning to get my wife's oil changed and going to request the service manager look at it early one morning next week. I'll keep you posted

Face it into the sunlight in the morning and sit inside and look out. That's where you'll see it the best.

Good luck.
