How much old oil?

OK. So i have a weird question. When you change your oil how much should there be? I know we use 7 quarts to fill. I change my oil myself every 3K, or 4K. this time it was almost 5k. But i use the exact "SRT Pennzoil" oil. I usually drive to the Naples base hobby shop and use the lift, and their rolling oil catcher so this never came up. Today i did it in my driveway as i don't have time to get there, and its been 4800 miles. So i used a bucket and then just put it in a container with a funnel. Well the old oil only filled one Adams 1 gallon detail spray container. And this included what i dumped from my catch can. Should i be worried that there was so little? I would assume thats almost 2 quarts low.

Im scared. I only have 25K on my jeep and hope its not burning. Have NO other bad indications, but did get the 0520 "oil pressure sensor" error for a while but went away.

thanks

JR.

If you drained your 6.4 engine oil pan completely and only recovered 4 quarts, then I would say "Yes, be concerned".

I find it hard to believe that a 2014 SRT is losing 3 quarts between oil changes. Apparently you are familiar with oil changing. Are you the original owner?

Are you sure 7 quarts were added to Maxene's last oil change? Are you sure the container you drained to was 1 gallon? Are you sure you drained it completely (not on an incline)? Do you see any oil leakage on your engine? Have you checked your spark plugs for burning oil?

Throwing that oil sensor code reinforces the issue. Did you get it during this last oil change? My money is on less than 7 quarts were added last change. If so, perhaps that could account for the code.

If everything seems to be fine (engines sounds good, oil pressure indicator above 50 psi, no oil pressure code, etc.), then I would check it on a frequent basis.

i didnt check it prior. wish i did. need to dump the oil from the container. wondering if the container holds more than 4 quarts when completely full. and im 99.99999999 sure that i put in 7 last time too. this is my baby. and no other sign of trouble. i keep the display on the gauges and have always seen good pressure. even when i got the code i had 60 psi. just scares the crap outta me. looking at the adams container thats brand new i could see another quart squezing in and there was about .5 that didnt fit. but thats still 1.5 quarts unaccounted for. WTF?

Fill it back up with the 7 quarts and just keep an eye on the dip stick. and make sue you have the current part number revision of the dip stick. there have been issues with dip sticks being the wrong length on the 5.7 and 6.4 engines. even if you are outside of the years the tsb states make sure you have the current revision for your part number. some have found their dip sticks wrong even though they were outside of the stated tsb years

Oil pressure is not a reliable indication of low oil until it's too late. As in toasted engine. Check your oil at every fuel up as well as your other fluids. A quick visual check is cheap insurance. Full service gas stations are no longer available. When they were, they checked your oil for you every time they filled your tank with fuel. Take care of your baby and it will take care of you.

A lot of gallon containers will hold a good 4.5 gallons or more if you fill to tippity top.

Also don't forget the oil filter will absorb about 1/2 a quart.

So you probably had at least 5 quarts.

It's normal to burn "some" oil.

Always check it after fill (after it's been run and settled) and before you empty, that is, if you truly love your baby.
