I fricking hate wheel locks now!!

I am hating life right now. I was going to take my wheels off to apply brake lube on the pins. First rear went fine. Second one not so much. The key broke off in the stupid lock. Took it to the tire shop to just have all locks removed with the extractor. The other three came off just fine but the wheel in question wont budge. Called the lock company and they next day shipped three new keys. Just my luck. the damn lock shatters but not at the base where it needs to in order for me to remove the GD wheel.

So now I have no way to grab the GD thing and in the process my wheel got gnarled up.

AGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Never again will I use wheel locks. If they cannot survive impact wrench like the stupid lugs can then what is the point. Thank God this is just the factory wheel. If I had some expensive aftermarket wheels I would have lost my shit.

I've never used to wheel locks before but.....I would never use an impact on a lock. I bet the mfg. instructions also state that.

Re: I fricking hate wheel locks now!!

Never trusted locking lug nuts and always switched over to spline lugs. Still require an adapter and gives a little more security over the standard.

I always use my impact to quickly spin the lugs then hit them with mysocket by hand to finish.

I was actually removing them by hand when they cracked the first time.

I am sick to the stomach. I dont know how I will remove this wheel now.

Called the dealer and they said they would have to chisel it out and it would be $135 an hour with no estimate on how long it would take. **** that!

These came with the Jeep. I will never use locks again because I am seeing that this is a common problem for people with locks.

I have had locks on one vehicle before this years ago and I will never run them again.

Hopefully my wheel survives this ordeal.

I learned a long time ago not to use impact guns on wheel lugs at all. They cause more problems than they're worth. Tire shops use them to save time.....I have a lot of time when it comes to my vehicles.

Without being there to see exactly what's going on all I can say is maybe drill out the center (sacrifice the stud) or try a pneumatic chisel. Good luck removing what's left of the lock.

Re: I fricking hate wheel locks now!!

Yeah, I was thinking about taking off the wheel locks that came with my HA. I'm worried about what a winter's worth of road salt and spray is going to do to them. After seeing the above I'm going to have this done sooner rather than later.

I noticed they put a scrape in the paint on the wheel they had to remove for the brake caliper recall. They did it trying to get the wheel lock off.

Re: I fricking hate wheel locks now!!

Maybe the wrong place for this but.....I was seriously just about to order some wheel locks. Only because my spare is going to be mounted on the rear bumper and it seems like easy pickings if some one wants it. Any suggestion on keeping my spare from walking off?

Re: I fricking hate wheel locks now!!

Damn nightmare dude. When I went to get my new rims installed I realized I left the key on the wheel after I installed my rotors and it was long gone. I had Mopar locks and the shop said those are the only ones they can't remove bc the outside bulb on the nut spins. I was lucky to get a key overnighted. I'm using locks again and know they can be a pain, but can't live w/o them having aftermarket wheels.
Hope you get it worked out.

I have never had a single issue using an impact on lugs. I have owned alot of cars and not a single issue. This issue is because of the lock. I dont even use a very powerful impact. It is a POS that I bought as a kid and it wont die. I think I got it at walmart in the 90's.

Take them off. This is a freaking nightmare that I wish I could have skipped out on.

I am going to use a chisel to try to crack out the base of the nut. Wish me luck that I dont crack the wheel.

I am highly aggrevated with this ****ing thing. I never worried about my wheels being stolen. Now the one is ****ed up. Fortunately for me, it is the only wheel on my jeep that had any road rash. I honestly feel like cutting the thing out with my plasma cutter. I then calm down and think rationally.

I took a break from working on it today because I knew it would not turn out good with the anger I have right now.
