Take the car to a tint shop and ask them to put a vinyl wrap over the chrome. If done right only you will be able to tell, and you can peel it off if you fnd you dont want it any more. It will also be far cheaper than painting.

Sigh, I did take it to three shops that do wrap all three said they wouldn't touch it ,I would have a go myself but me old hands and eye site are not what the used to be let alone with a blade for such a fine cut , I don't mind paying someone money that's not the issue , it's just finding someone to commit to it who also respects my car . Ahh I'm over it now stuff it I'll just keep searching around I guess . Thanks for the comments everyone

Go to Bunnings/Masters and buy the Plastidip (or similar) in gloss black.
Get a smal and medium paintbrush.
Get wife to paint the chrome, as most women have a better eye, hand and patience.
If it gets on anything you do not want it on, wait till it dries and rub it off.

Depending on how nice you are washing your car, you should get 2 years of life out of it before it looks crappy.
While this is a temporary solution, it is reversible and you can see why people recommend Plastidip or wrapping over painting.

The parts are a BITCH to get right with paint and will look like shit if it is not done perfect. You will also have to replace the rear 1/4 glass to replace the chrome if they stuff it up.

I am glad you did not get them to do the work, as I think you dodged a big stuffup.
