Smile Knee Air Bag Question - Factory or Cover-Up?

Took my 2015 in several months ago for a warranty issue - tilt adjust working intermittently, and the final remedy was to replace the steering column. Fast forward to the present, and I notice a panel below the steering column has popped open along the top edge. What looks like hot melt glue was used to secure the panel along the top edge and it looks like some molded-in retention tabs are broken off.

My theory is that a tech thought this was just a trim panel and tried to pry it off, not realizing that this is a panel covering the knee air bag, and its not meant to be removed unless the air bag is deployed.

Can anyone confirm if this is or isn't the factory method of securing the panel, or did a bad tech try to cover up his mistake? The dealership has ordered a replacement airbag assembly, so the issue will be fixed . But if this was a cover-up on the part of the tech, I'm more than a little upset . Thanks.

+1 on that. I would never trust the airbag after finding something like that.

Thanks for the replies. Taking it in to dealer for the replacement air bag. Service manager and I are supposed to compare old and new parts. He still swears his guys wouldn't do such a thing......I will reserve judgment until tomorrow.....Will post an update on it later. Thanks,

So then the tech messed up. He probably got a pay raise for doing so.

I'd be pretty pissed that something that could have compromised my safety was fixed in this way. I hope they did something to make it right for you.

No, the service adviser and service manager did everything they could to avoid the issue of how it happened. Deny, deny, deny. They just wanted to fix the problem and move on. Needless to say that is the last time they will see me there for service or to buy my next vehicle.
