Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20?

Hi All,

I get my SRT at the end of the month and have been reading that swapping out the Pirelli's can help with ride comfort. I've also been reading that people have been putting 305mm width rubber on their standard 10inch rims.

Two questions;

1. Is 305mm width safe on 10inch, or should I be going 11inch?

2. Anyone using the Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20? If so, what are your thoughts so far?

Were using 305 35....on 22" wheels. I tried a 305 40 and it rubbed. Id say 305 45 20 would definitely rub.

In my asshole perspective I say either A) Live with the Pirellis or B) buy 22s and get some proper tires

I'd never run a tire with a lower speed or load rating than stock.

The first step on the road to recovery is admitting it...

Seriously I'm having a hard time too with tires. I may just go down to a slightly narrower tire say 275 or 285 Michelin pilot. I find my car tramlines all over the road.

Re: Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20?

^ I'm the nicest Asshole you'll ever meet! I just don't sugar coat things. The nicest thing I've ever done on a forum is not said something. But I will never say something looks good or that something is a good idea if I don't truly feel that way. No false flattery.

In summary, we all knew what we were buying when we bought our rigs. Expensive to maintain compared to let's say a Ford Explorer. Rough Ride. Wide tires that take you all over the road. Expensive gas. Etc. When I bought the Jeep that's what I signed up for.

It's like 75% of all ZR1 owners who had to sell their car when it came time for a brake job because they couldn't afford the $15K thousand for new carbon ceramic rotors and pads.

If you aren't opposed to 22s and don't have to have forged there are a lot of dirt cheap 22s out there. FR are very cheap, look ok, and with proper tires will ride much better than stock.

My jeep has light weight 22s with 305 Pirellis. They have the same speed and load rating as stock. It drives sloppy compared to stock, and that's with 1" less sidewall. Now imagine running a higher sidewall and non runflat in stock? It's going to handle like a Ford Expedition.

Re: Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20?

Anyone ever go to a 315/35/20 all around and see if that rubbed? Lots of options for that. What about a 295/40/20? Thought I saw a set of fallen azenis that looked good in that size

Thanks for that Scott. This was one of the bigger concerns for me. Narrower rubber it is then.

Being so versatile, I think the Jeep SRT is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For me this is primarily the family car and once you get off the freeways in Australia the roads can get pretty seriously crap. This is where a good deal of my driving will be done, so if I have to sacrifice some tire performance in exchange for comfort I am happy to do so.

I could well be missing something, but I thought the Pirelli's were rated as 110Y? Wouldn't this mean they have a lower weight rating than the Kuhmo at 116V? The Kuhmo's speed rating of 240kph Vs the 300kph of the Pirelli's is quite a difference, however one that is unlikely to ever effect my driving/enjoyment of the car.

Glad it's not just me . Good point with the tramlining, I hadn't thought of that. Think I might look at 275/50R20's as they'll have a very similar total diameter (so speedo should still be accurate) and should be able to fit them on 8.5inch wheels which seem to be the best width selection in Aus if your want variety to chose from.

Re: Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20?

Why not go with 295/45/20 Toyo St2, been running those on my truck for over a year now and they're great better than my 3 season pirellis the truck came with, alot less noisy. Also cost less.

I wouldn't go with kumho as they have had alot of problems with sidewall splitting in many different ranges of tires over the last few years (friend is a wholesale warehouse supplier and he dropped kumho for this reason).

Yeah, have been reading good things about those Toyo's. Went in to get a quote from a local tyre shop near my work and the guy said I should also be looking at the General Grabber UHP 114V's in the same size. Said they were as good as the Toyo's and that they generated very low interior noise. Quote I got was $50 cheaper per corner, so may look at them if I can find some reviews.

Re: Kuhmo Ecsta 305/45R20?

I got the General Grabbers on mine - love them. The run-flat Pirelli's were sticky, but they rode like crap and didn't last 16k miles.

The Generals are also the only tires still made in the 295/40 size that match the tread width of the Pirellis. Everything else is narrower (search for my thread on just tires).
