Laughable Price for Brake Job

17K miles on my Jeep now and time to replace the pads. Dealer said I would have to have the rotors replaced too if I have them install pads because of a federal law? $1800 for 4 pads and rotors. Wow, rotors dont need to be replaced, guess im going to do the pads in my garage at home and save $1600.

I think im going to stick to the OEM Brembo pads, I know there are others out there but the dust doesnt bother me too much and the stopping power is great with the OEMs.

Do I need any special tools for the pad replacements on these? Ive done my fair share of brake jobs, just want to know if there is anything special about these.

Ask them to show you the applicable law from the federal register--or bet them $1000 they are full of excrement.

Frankly, I'd go to a different dealer if one pulled a stupid stunt like that--and note this action VERY loudly as I exit the dealership thru the sales area.

SOME model jeeps had delicate rotors easily warped, but you'd know already if yours was one of them.

Re: Laughable Price for Brake Job

I rarely replace rotors unless they are messed up pretty bad. My rotors are fine, I was pretty confused when they said I HAD to replace them. I bought the Jeep from them too and overall they have always been great with other things. what a joke huh.

Re: Laughable Price for Brake Job

A lot of rotors these days aren't as thick as they used to be and depending, can't be surfaced without becoming out of spec. That being said, you are usually good for at least one brake change before needing new rotors. At the price they are quoting you, they can go fly a kite to put it nicely.

Too many mods to list for each, so let's just say a lot was done over the years.

Pads slide out like cartridges. You will only need small long thin punch, a hammer, a socket wrench and a tool to compress the pistons in the caliper. Few pics below

Re: Laughable Price for Brake Job

The OEM Brembo rotors are very soft. There should be a minimum spec available on our cars somewhere in a technical service manual. If you get some vernier callipers and measure them. If they are below spec, then there is a risk of your pads falling out or jamming between the rotor and calliper.
Also you guys get away cheaply. In Australia the same job is closer to $4k.

OTOH, I always replace rotors, because by the time I take the rotors out to get resurfaced and get them back I've wasted enough time to pay for a new set of rotors.
And hanging pads without at least resurfacing the rotors is a fools errand.

IMHO, of course.

There's a huge difference between possibly good idea and being told that some unspecified federal law requires it.

e.g. what federal law said you had to take rotors somewhere to have them resurfaced?
As long as they aren't gouged and are safely above the thickness and variant thickness, you can cross hatch them yourself pretty quickly.

Re: Laughable Price for Brake Job

Is it best to just pick up some Brembo slotted rotors then when the time comes? They aren't too brutally outrageous are they, <$900 for all 4 corners? I know the OEM pads are about $500 all around though, right?

Re: Laughable Price for Brake Job

No, OEM pads are less. I got mine a few weeks ago for less than $200. And yes, all 4. And they are OEM purchased from the dealer.
