Re: My First SRT Oil Change

I just had oil changed on my 2014 at the dealer. I asked them to swap the dipstick per the TSB, (my dipstick part# ends in AA.) When I picked it up, the service writer said they checked into it and the part# ending in AB is the same part and there is no reason to switch them so I am set to go. I had places to be and didn't feel like arguing. Is it worth going back with a print out of the TSB?

hmm, well, technically there is no TSB for the '14 SRT, just early '15's...BUT...pretty sure that was a mistake as the "wrong" part # is the same one you have so unless your '14 oil pan depth, oil volume, etc.. is different than a '15 (don't worry it's the same) then you need the correct AB dipstick.

Without a TSB the dealer can't give you the free warranty "repair" officially. Many got screwed with by the dealers with multiple trips so they just paid $15 ish out of pocket and ordered one.

To confirm the need and difference, plus maybe to score a free one thru dealer, here are pics of the correct AB one with measurements....do me a favor and measure yours the same way....length matters, , but the real important thing is where the operating range hash marks are.

So the correct one is 26.5" long measured from the underside of the handle base (ie top of dipstick tube) and the op range is at about 24.75-25.25" measuring from same spot.

Please post your measurements back here....thx

Re: My First SRT Oil Change

Looks like the length overall is the same but the acceptable level range is different.

Re: My First SRT Oil Change

thanks for sharing, you definitely need the AB dipstick...

So since your AA dipstick has a top of range (ie the "full" 7 qt mark) at 25 1/8” it should only take about 6.25 qts to get you there. If 7 qts are put in yours with that dipstick it will be about 3/8” over your top range mark appearing to be overfilled but not actually. If you fill qt by qt to arrive at your top of range full) mark you will be about .75 qt LOW, but still in op range, barely…The AB dipstick would show you “full” with 7 qts in.

Re: My First SRT Oil Change

Just checked mine, was a very late '14 - probably one of the last ones. It has the AA stick... hopefully my dealer will understand and replace.

Re: My First SRT Oil Change

My in service date was April 2013, so the early 14s used the AA stick as well. I think it's strange the TSB would be for 15s only if there were no changes to the pan or dipstick tube.

not sure what's up with the apparent "miss" as the exact same motor/setup cannot have 2 different dipsticks with different op range "depths" as measured from the top of dipstick tube...this of course assumes they did not change the dipstick tube length....hmmm

I was talking with the SRT hotline today in follow-up to a filter spec question and I mentioned this issue to the guy and clearly explained it...he seemed to get it and said he would put this in the engineer's desktop action folder for review

Re: My First SRT Oil Change

I just got back from my dealership for some warrantee issues. My service tech seems top be very cooperative. (This was my first interaction with this dealership.) I got a carbon fiber dash insert replaced - supposed to be two, but thru a mix up, only one was ordered.

Also had the front rotors replaced with the slotted upgrade - and that is with 20k+ miles. There was no resistance from the service guy. Nice.

Anyway, while there I showed him the dipstick TSB. They didn't have any in stock so they ordered the "AB". So I will get to compare first hand when I go back for my cf dash insert.

I also was informed that after 3-4 oil changes they recommend replacing the drain plug (with the integral orange O-ring washer) due to eventual O-ring deformation.

Oh ... and while we're on this subject. I've read in numerous posts on this forum that many posters are buying 6 quarts of oil for their oil + filter changes. Every "official" reference I've found says the change with filter is 7 quarts. Are these posters not aware of this difference, or are there different SRT engine requirements?

It's 7 quarts. Maybe you're seeing guys with the 5.7 post? Can't remember how many quarts that one is.

Either way, a lot of bulk sales come in 6 quart packages unfortunately.

Actually I bet the 6qt stuff is coming from folks with the wrong dipstick cuz if u drain and fill using the wrong AA dipstick ad your guide 6 qts puts u at 1/8" ish (.25qt) under the top of range mark...7qts on the wrong dipstick puts u visually way overfilled at about 3/8" (.75 qt) above top range mark....That's my guess anyway...

And on the 5.7 with the wrong version dip stick it's the opposite it takes 8 quarts to get you to the full line when it should be 7.
