Hey guys. Need new tires real soon. Been running Toyo Proxes II. Meh. It's OEM size but looks a little anorexic in width. I'd like something that looks just as meaty as the pirellis.

Thinking of the hankook Ventus ST RH06.

What experience do you guys have for anything other than the pirellis. Stock rim only.

What's the widest size I could put on without really affecting the diameter and speedo calibration.

Thanks for your input fellas....and ladies.

A word of caution on the Hankook Ventus ST's they are TERRIBLE in the snow - so if you get any in your area - i would avoid them. They are a lot quieter than the OEM Pirelli's though. I 'm getting new tires next week, and I'm trying the Yokohama Parada Spec X's. Hopefully they will be better in the snow.

I have to give you warning.....

I got the yoko's last year and I am getting noise that is driving me maddddddd after about 7000 miles or so I think. I cannot tell for certain but it is either the tires or the hubs are bad.....

I love the ride of the yokos but if it is these tires.....WTF....I cannot do this crap for very much longer.....It is a whirling loud madness.

Any chance you guys can post a few pics?

If you can, take some looking down the side...front to rear or opposite. Then maybe a little closer at an angle.

Thanks guys

I'm in Atlanta. We do get some snow here now and then. So, Hankooks are no good in light snow eh?

Curious about the Pradas and General too.

Toyo Proxes STII's are another option, i changed to these 12 months ago and they are great..... no snow here though

Lol, just read the first line!! ? please ignore

LOL.

Seems like each tire has its own set of complaints.

Pirellis: wear fast. Loud ride

Toyo: look a little narrow and don't grip well

General: Summer only? Depends on the website

Hankooks: lousy in snow. Even a little snow?

Pradas: harmonic sound that'll drive you mad

Ugh

On our third set of the Generals.

They ARE considered All season tires though I have never tried them in any snow more than an extremely light dusting.

Overall I have been very happy with them, love the looks, love the price, love the wet weather traction. Summer traction is very good, almost GREAT but not quite.

Every tire I have ever owned that I would put the "GREAT" label on for traction, would also wear extremely quickly so even though I can't put that label on these, I CAN say, the amount of grip and the wear, is a perfect trade off for me. Very happy on both of those check boxes.

They also ride VERY well, much better than the stock run flats, and though I'm sure I lost some cornering as the sidewalls aren't as stiff, it was negligible for my driving.

The ONLY issue I have... The noise... Now I haven't had the models listed previously in this thread to compare, and I can say these aren't the loudest tires I have ever had, AND, for the first 25 ~ 35% of life they do well... But as you get close to and beyond 50% tread, they DO start to get loud.

Bottom line, every tire will have compromises.

The OEM Pirelli 3 seasons came stock on our SRT and we LOVED them, no noise, VERY sticky, little harsh ride but not bad for a run flat, But they also wore out in less than 20K miles and I simply couldn't justify the cost.

I am overall very happy with the Generals but they do get louder than I would like and I did give up some cornering and slightly less stickiness, but improved daily ride quality at a much lower cost and longer tread life.

Daniel454, thanks for the write-up...sums up what I netted out after tons of reading threads...

my spec need was:

295/45/20 size
summer only use
non-run flat
must have great wet traction
above were non-negotiable
performance (cornering, grip) vs. treadwear vs. cost mix was negotiable

After looking at all other known options the General Grabber UHP was the single option. Change one spec above and decision changes. I tried like 4ell to find the discontinued Vred Ultrac Vorti but no go so Generals on my new summer XO Verona's arrive in 3 weeks....

I've had the Parada's for a few days now.

Pros: Cheap, look nice enough, should wear well, ride is a bit softer.

Cons: squeal, squeal, and more squeal. I've "peeled out" without meaning to several times. That never happened with the PZeros. I'm also hearing squeal on hard turns.

Waiting for the weather to dry up a bit so I can push it a bit more and see how they grip.

Those of you with Generals, do they bark when you drop the hammer?
During the colder months, yes, but just barely, warmer months, straight on, no not at all.

Has anyone tried Falkens?

ZIEX S/TZ05 TIRE | Falken Tire

FWIW, it's an H speed rated....if u intend to have "fun" you do not want an H rated tire....V minimum....it's not so much the speed rating, I mean who goes 149mph (V), 168/W, etc...it's the tread compound, pattern and, thus, the performance characteristics you get from that....these Falkens are a more legit All-Season Touring/Cruising tire than the Gen Grab UHP's which are more summer performance oriented with a token snowflake rating thrown in...but the the Falkens will wear better and be quieter....am curious tho about any user comments....choices really suck for us

just got the final word on the non-runflat Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico in OEM size, 295/45/20....1 single tire in stock in US and Pirelli says that tire is kaput....UHP's for me....will be a decent tire I am sure just a quick wearer, oh well

Id say there really is no solid second choice from Pirelli for OEM size. Each seems to have a down side in one form or another.

I've been running the Toyo Proxes II. Quiet ride. But a smaller 'footprint'. Looks a tad anorexic. Don't grip as well as Pirelli.

The Generals I think will grip a little better than my Toyos. Plus they don't look 'skinny'.

Our rim size is a PITA.

This is exactly my opinion as well. Honestly, all tires are always a give and take, you cant get super sticky, super soft AND great tread wear for example...

But in our size, honestly, they are all a bit more of a compromise than I would like.

The Generals fit my current needs better than any of the others (including the OEM), and the issues with them are not enough to lose sleep over but every time I need new ones, I do check to see if any new options exist.

My favorite tire EVER, of ANY size, has been the Nitto Invo...

Super quiet, awesome stickiness, amazing wet traction, tread pattern is wild, they check off every box for me. They do wear fairly quickly (again, that trade off) but not excessively.

Unfortunately they aren't made in the size needed for the Jeep. Since Nitto is owned by Toyo and Toyo does have options in that size, I keep hoping the Invo will be an option but not yet.

Yeah, I think the key factor is if you want a real all-season then the Generals are out (only a token snowflake IMO) but if you have no winter or have dedicated winters and have rain then the Generals are the call just gonna wear faster and you lose l-r rotations...

Off my own topic here...

Regarding tire sizes, grip, width, etc...I'm VERY surprised the TrackHawk doesn't have fatter tires. I think it should have 315s at least on the rear. What does the BMW X5 have? Those are meaty.

Back on track now...if I ever have the extra $, I'd go up a rim size to open up tire options. 21" would look just right. I've seen a few pics.

Generals are on. Look great. Sorry, no pics for now. My iPhone camera went Tango Uniform.

I noticed now that my right rear wheel sticks out more than the left. She was in a wicked bad accident years ago. Pics on here from my old thread somewhere. Anyway, I never noticed it before. Is there any adjustments for that? Chassis alignment or something.

either all was perfect after repairs and something shifted or loosened or your rear chassis area had an unrepaired tweak...no odd tire wear or handling issues? anyone who was trailing you ever mention your arse was tracking a little adrift? can only imagine what was done and all the areas affected with $42k in work so who knows....time to invoke the guarantee...just sayin'....:D

Hey guys. Haven't been on the forum in a quite a while. She was repaired. Total rebuild was $42,000. Yikes. It wasn't totaled because the cost kept trickling up from the original estimate...which was barely 18k. The ins appraiser wasn't familiar with SRT.. By the time it approached the "totaling threshold" cost, they were already fairly committed to fixing it. They body shop was AMAZING. They were recommended to me from a buddy I fly with. If you're around Atlanta...Wren's Body Shop, Douglasville. You won't be disappointed.

You can't tell anything happened to her. Drives hard and fast still. Totally straight. No issues. Repairs are warrantied for life....

The Generals:

So far we like them. Alignment is good. Balance good. Noise is no better or worse than the Toyo Proxes. The look better than the Toyos.

I haven't dropped the hammer yet to see if they stick. It was raining a lot before I had to leave town. I'll report back after I get a max performance acceleration in. :)
