New SRT 16 owner

Hey all. I purchased two weeks ago a 16 white SRT. I moved up from a 14 Altitude and currently have a 14 Viper TA. This jeep is REALLY nice. At first I was a bit underwhelmed but I think it has to do with having a stage II heads/cam Viper. However after the first 500 miles or so I noticed the exhaust opened up a little more and it felt overall more responsive.

I really liked the older front end and with geting a better discount I decided to pass on the 17. The Track Hawk I am sure will be awesome but I really wanted a proven engine that's been pretty worked out and just like NA HP better. Plus, this Jeep really pushed my budget and I wouldn't have been able to go any higher on the Track Hawk.

I have a few questions. I had a 15 Viper GT prior to my TA and it had the 18 speaker HK system and it THUMPED. I figured that the Jeep with more room for sound to resonate would hit even harder and I find it to be really weak. Some songs sound great but overall it seems like it's not working properly. I noticed on the challenger forums many people complain about it but it appears there were more uconnect isssues. I registered my uconnect and see no driver updates. The dealer thinks it is fine so I am not sure how to proceed. It doesn't sound bad, every speaker is working but it just sounds "OK."

Regarding doing an intake/tune, will the tune void the warranty? I am on a voided warranty with my heads/cam TA so I do want to keep a full intact warranty on this. If it's "hit or miss" regarding the dealer and honoring warranty with a tune I suppose I will stay stock so i would love input on that. I was looking at the GThaus catback for a better sounding exhaust but have read the backpressure isn't enough to increase HP and possible loss of HP could occur so I am hesitant to switch out even the exhaust.

Otherwise this vehicle is excellent. I love the overall fit and finish of the interior and the exterior really gets a lot of compliments. It's a nice mix of being understated while still having an aggressive and cohesive design. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but here are a few quick shots.

Re: New SRT 16 owner

Interesting point about the stereo. I have the HK in my '17 and find that the sound definitely fluctuates, especially when streaming. Have not messed with it enough yet, but do agree that I do think it is "flat".

When I got my 15 Viper with the HK I really felt like I had an aftermarket sound system in there. It was awesome. I am going to have to go to a dealer and listen to the audio in other jeeps with the same system to get an Apples to Apples comparison. The 12 Vs 18 speaker viper upgrade is a night and day difference and when I compare the 12 speaker in my current viper to my Jeep they sound very comparable. I feel like there is an issue with the amp that is just not allowing the true fidelity of the audio be heard. Streaming is definitely a source issue. The best sound comes from direct connect ipod followed by radio and then Sirius XM.

Re: New SRT 16 owner

Welcome! I can help out on several of the topics.

1- The tune will void the warranty. On the 15+ the ECU's have to be "hacked" in order to tune them so they will know. Some tuners sell a seperate ECU with the tune that way you can switch to the original one if you need to go back to the dealer. If there is a big problem and they start diagnosing the car, they will notice that the mileage on the ECU does not match that of the car. Again it depends on the dealer and your relationship with them.

2. The GT Haus is rumored to have power loss when the valves are openned. I have yet to see a dyno to prove this. Going off of "what I feel" doesnt cut it, atleast for me. To me the GT Haus is by far the best sounding exhaust on the market for the Jeep. The problem is getting your hands on it. We have ours on order along with 4 other systems. They were due this week and now its been pushed back to the end of November. We spoke with them on Friday and they will more then likely not be available for sale since the pre orders are so high. So who knows when the next batch is due after this one. If your interested in them shoot me a pm. Right now we run the AFE Machforce on ours which is in essense the same design (off road x to the mufflers minus the valves) and we noticed a significant difference on our Jeep. I cant see open valves making that much of a difference especially with a tune.

Good luck on the Jeep and great looking Viper.

Re: New SRT 16 owner

Our '17 summit has the same radio, I thought it would sound better as well. But I'm thinking each speaker is getting less than 50w each so I wouldn't expect much.

Thank you for the reply and welcome (along with everyone else). Sounds like I'll keep it stock. The ecu and mileage discrepancy is what fca is doing to the Viper crowd right now and denying warranty work despite the controller being tuned by dick winkles himself but I won't go off on that rant lol. This will be my daily so I will just keep the 800hp Viper stage ll tunerand this beast stock.

It's really an amazing step up and I seem to enjoy its benefits more and more. The V8 6.4 really does need to some breakin miles as it feels much tighter now and the exhaust is a bit more throaty. I love having what I imagine to be the last big motor in a jeep. I really struggled with the decision as the track hawk is due next year with a full redesign the following. I am glad I decided to pull the trigger. Tomorrow I get tints and I'll likely just do minor cosmetic mods for now. I want to get the SRT logo on that plastic piece by the exhaust. I don't know why it doesn't say SRT on some years as it was a nice touch. But 120 dollars is pretty expensive for a plastic clip on piece!

Re: New SRT 16 owner

How necessary is it for me to get winter tires? I'm not gonna replace the rims as I have the wheel protection package so if they get messed up over the winter I'd imagine I can use that 3 year warranty I bought the car with. Just curious if it's drivable as is in the winter months?

I would get a set of winter shoes and mount them on some factory reproduction rims. I know you have the wheel protection but it's much easier just too switch them out when needed vs having them remounted and balanced. Balancing being the key point as there are lot of complaints of balancing issues.
