No start

Well I jumped in my truck this morning and it started then shut off immediately. I noticed the lights flickering on the dash and under the hood was a clicking sound. The clicking sound under the hood was coming form the fuse/relay box. It would only make the clicking noise when I would unlock the doors with the remote. So I checked voltage at the posts and only had 6V. Obvious thing to do was jump start it. Soon as I hooked up the cables everything seemed to go back to normal as far as no relays clicking and dash lights not flickering. I had it on battery cables for a while and it still wouldn't start. I was just getting a small crank like it wanted to start but wouldn't. I took the terminals off the battery and checked voltage and was at about 12V. When I put the terminals back on it went down to 8V. I then took the positive terminal off of the fuse/relay box and measured voltage at the battery posts under the hood and was getting 12V but when I reconnected it went back down to 6V. So I'm thinking something is draining power from somewhere. I tried pulling fuses and relays one at a time to see if the voltage would go back up after I pulled each one but did not see any change. Now the dealer wants to charge $390 for a new battery parts and labor and I'm sure the battery is fine and that's not the issue. Anyone have insight on what may be the cause of this issue.

Thanks

Re: No start

There is a harness under the car. It is pretty exposed. Check under the car and see if the harness is intact with no damage. Might be a small short. A company makes a shield for the harness somewhere on this form. Probably not the issue but who knows. good to check.

Re: No start

You state that you do not need a new battery but the Dealer does. What is the Dealer basing their decision on. I thought that you had to test your battery under load to get an accurate reading. It can have a weak or dead cell and I don't think your test would indicate that. How old is your battery. I am sure you could beat that price if you go to a parts house if you want an oem battery or go to any parts store if you don't care about originality. Sure sounds like a weak battery to me. Good luck.

It was the original battery that's what made me doubt their conclusion. It ended up being the battery. Their test showed 8V and 700 CCA. It's just hard to trust dealers these days. So I bit the bullet and told them to go ahead and replace the battery. Also took care of the long overdue recalls. All good now
