Sometimes Benn0 and those are the heavy's but it's really not a problem.

I've had some interesting landings in a 172 on the grass strip next to ZQN a few years ago (when I was carefree and single - my pilots license is no longer current) on a few dodgy met-challenged days.

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

Thanks for the help everyone...the reason we are choosing Melbourne or Sydney is that we have a glut of hotel points to use and both of those cities have numerous options. It sounds like we can't go wrong with either city. We may try to do a side trip or two via train...I'd prefer to minimize flights between numerous locations so we have more time to take in the sights and not spend time in airports. I will say my wife has been to Melbourne before, albeit briefly, which is why we are leaning towards Sydney...would be a new place for both of us.

My 2 cents, go to Adelaide, and spend a few days in the Barossa Valley. The worlds best vinyards there. Then catch a flight to Hamilton Island and have a second honeymoon with the misses. No crowds to worry about.

We're doing that a few months later in Bora Bora...

Fly to Adelaide and then rent a car and drive back to Melbourne.
One of the most scenic and lovely drives around. Plenty of places to stay.
Google the Great Ocean Road as it is a must drive destination.

While I am not a huge fan of Melbourne, I think a drive back from Ade to Mel will be 3 casual days and then 4 days in Melbourne, will be a great idea.

What time of year are you going?

The train from Melbourne to Sydney isn't great (XPT), takes all day, you'd be better off driving, at least you can take side trips then. Or flying will only take 3-4 hours with airport transit time. Train services in Australia are generally poor.

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

Has anyone done the Princess Hwy (I think that is the name) between Melbourne and Sydney? I am using miles for my flights and my current options get me to MEL or SYD. We are thinking I meet my wife in MEL, spend a day or two, drive to Sydney over the next 3 days and spend 2 nights in some of the smaller towns and then spend the last couple days in Sydney before flying home. This should allow me to see both major cities, as well as some of the coastal areas and smaller towns.

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

I have done the drive many times. It is about 9hrs to do. Personally I don't think there is a huge amount to see. There is an alternate route that is far more sight seeing friendly, but is a good deal longer, not an issue if you're planning on taking your time.
Hopefully this link shows the direction correctly - https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/M...33.8674869!3e0

Having driven the usual one many times, maybe I am just too used to it to see get anything from it.

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

Both cities are world class. I really love Melbourne with access to the Great Ocean Road which is one of the best drives you will ever do. It's very easy for a tourist to drive around. Great food etc
Sydney is a beautiful city on a beautiful harbour but would have to be the worst city to drive around. Their public transport is very good but i like to get around on my own.
My choice would be to stay in Adelaide it's a fantastic city with lots to do if you are into good food and wines. Lots of wine growing regions there. Easy paced, easy to get around with lots of parks and some beautiful buildings.
All three have great beaches and plenty of walking/hiking tracks.
My opinion only.
