O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

My wife will be down in Australia on business in the Adelaide region. She has been once before, but didn't have much personal time to sight-see. I am thinking of flying out and meeting up with her after her obligations and spending a week in the country. Right now we are looking at spending our week with either Sydney or Melbourne as our "base camp." Strictly from a visitor's perspective, which one would you choose and why? We both love local culture, good food and general sightseeing. We also enjoy hiking and outdoor activities as well. Any help from residents would be greatly appreciated!

They are both lovely no doubt, but simply put which one do by far the most tourists go to? Sydney, and for good reason.

Come on down bro- you'll love it!

The next step is to Google top 10 things to do in Sydney, build a list and take it from there.......lots of sight seeing, hiking, activities, good food etc etc.....it's all up to you.

If you like Wine as well as food then when in Adelaide I'd suggest a tour in the Barossa Valley.

Couple of good options for walking tracks in Sydney, particularly in the Blue Mountains

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

You’re going to start a fight with a Melb vs Sydney thing. Firstly, what time of year are you coming here?

Food – Melbourne (can’t be argued)
Local Culture – Melbourne (will be argued)
General Sightseeing – Sydney (can’t be argued)

Sydney has the pretty bays & harbour, and general sightseeing. Melbourne is far easier to get around, cheaper, more culturally evolved.
Sydney is a pain to get around, I’ve been living here 8 years and it still drives me nuts. Melbourne’s beautiful sights are out of town instead of right there in the heart of the city.
Hiking activities are probably pretty similar, the Blue Mountains are about an 1.25 – 1.5hr drive out of the Sydney CBD (I live nearish to them). The Dandenong’s are a similar trip ex Melbourne.
Melbourne is colder (it’s further south so it should be), Sydney is more humid, but not crazy humid. The time of year has a big impact on what general weather is like, no surprise there.
Melbourne is a sports mad city, so if any sport interests you, there is usually something on. If you’re going anywhere else in the country and that is the point of the “Base Camp” statement, then Sydney is of course more central on the east coast.

Melbourne 7 sessions in one day
Pretentious people
Best part of Melbourne is the view in the rear view mirror when leaving town.

Sydney just a big city
Again Pretentious people

Get out to smaller areas

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

There's always someone who wants to make generalisations about other cities residents.

How about we leave the state rivalry out of it and give the OP some constructive answers.

And I believe the saying is "4 seasons" in one day (ya pretentious prat lol).

Re: O/T: Australia Guys - First Time Visitor

Both cities are beautiful and neither will disappoint.

For me (a Kiwi that lives in Aust so I hold no Syd-centric not Melb-centric views), Melbourne holds a particular old world charm due to it architecture and cultural entity.

Snuke is correct with regards to the food. If you are a foodie then Melbourne would be the place to be.

Sydney however, is a spectacularly beautiful city purely and simply because of its harbour and surrounds. And because of those surrounds, it would be the natural choice (I think) for doing the outdoors thing ie: walking/hiking/nature.

But make no mistake, Sydney is not bereft of good food nor local culture so those things are covered per your brief.

I think taking in everything, then Sydney probably would be my choice for you.

But, I'm also going to say (because I'm parochial at heart) forget both and get on a plane to the South Island of NZ instead. It's only over the ditch (2 1/2-3 hours from both Melb or Syd).

I was going to say, if you like hiking, go south island NZ....

A flight into Queenstown is always a good heart starter...

edit: I also lived in Melbourne a long, long, long time ago. When I visited about 12 months ago the city center looked extremely run down. Not the Melbourne I remembered. Lots of closed down shops, and also a lot of construction. Maybe its better now....

I've lived in Sydney all my life, and have visited both Melbourne an Brisbane regular for work and play. All three cities have their pros and cons.

The only con for the South Island of NZ is the 3hr trip to get there (been three times and love it).
