Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

Want to get a few interior items wrapped in vinyl, and really like the idea of having the paddle shifters done.

I can't find any good info. or diagrams pertaining to proper removal, but from the looks of it, they should be relatively easy to remove (cover plate and possible screw securing them).

Anyone here with the knowledge or know how in regards to removing? Maybe even words of caution, as I'd hate to screw something up over here in this foreign land.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

I have no idea why you want to do this. And in vinyl? If anything, do leather. But besides that, I have never seen a car with fabric covered paddle shifters. At least ours are metal and not plastic. Covering them just doesn't make sense.

You could dip them maybe.

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

This picture (not everything appeals to me) shows the paddle shifters in red, and I think it looks good, along with some of the other red accents he has.

Although, it looks to me as if these shifters might have been plasti-dipped or hydro-dipped. I'm not so sure that a vinyl wrap will show the detail on the paddles in regards to the "+ and -" symbols.

I know everyone has different tastes, but the good thing about vinyl or plasti-dip is that it is reversible.

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

I'm guessing that not many have removed their paddle shifters, so I'll just have to hope for the best.

Here's what I plan to do:

Disconnect negative battery cable.
Pry off small access covers on back side of steering wheel.
Unscrew and disconnect paddle shifter from steering wheel (I hope it's that simple).
Mask off, prep and wrap or paint/dip.
Reassemble.

Time to start building enough courage....

Man, if that's the case, this might be an idea that gets scrapped.

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

Removing the steering wheel is easy. 2 clips on the airbag, one bolt in the middle of the steering wheel, done.

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

From the limited information I could find, it almost looks as if the paddles can be removed without the entire wheel coming off. The schematics that I have found (mopar.com) seem to show the paddles as being separate units, with an access door on the back side of the steering wheel.

In either case, without fully knowing, I would hate to venture down this path and "F" something up. Wouldn't be such a big deal if I was back home in the states, but being located in Austria, kinda puts me at a disadvantage with the local dealership/s.

Maybe I'll get lucky and run into somebody who has done this already.

Re: Paddle Shifters and Vinyl...?

Ive had my airbag off to switch to the red vapor bag andnjust going from memory it seems like the wiring for the paddles would be the problem. You may be able.to get the paddles off....but the wiring may tie you up. Check out the thread where we add the red vapor bag. It may have some drawings or pics of the paddles wiring.
