Replacement tires on stock wheels

Hi guys. I will be replacing the tires on the beast soon and I was wondering what was the biggest tire I can run on the stock Goliath wheels without rubbing or causing any issues? I'm thinking 305/45/20 or possibly 315/45/20. Also of any websites where I can find them at because I found that these sizes are hard to find especially a good looking and good performing tire.

Thanks

Re: Replacement tires on stock wheels

If your going with 305's you'll need 40's and with 315's you'll need 35's. As you go wider you'll have to go smaller in the sidewall height.

305 40 22 rubbed on full lock on my SRT....compare 305 40 20 and 305 40 22 on a tire calculator and see what comes up.

Re: Replacement tires on stock wheels

305/40/20 shouldn't rub as the 40 on a 20" wheel is not as high as a 40 on a 22" wheel so the gaps should be larger right?

Re: Replacement tires on stock wheels

My question is, why do you want a bigger tire?? This isn't like a Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Vette, etc. where you want more meat contacting the road because there isn't enough there stock. If you mean bigger, as in wider, it's not really going to help performance, and it's going to look terrible as your sidewall profile is going to increase even MORE. Most believe the sidewall profile needs to be reduced on the WK2 to make it look more performance oriented (i.e. going with the 22" wheels).

Re: Replacement tires on stock wheels

So why cant I keep the same sidewall size as the stock tire but go with a wider tread?

I do think in certain condition wider tires will help, even in the Jeep. At the track when it was cold I spun the tires a good deal, even when I managed to skip the water box. Now whether or not an extra 10mm is going to help who knows.

But more importantly wider tires look better and give the Jeep a more aggressive look. As fast as it is, the GTR looks like a weak coupe from behind because of it's skinny tires. The Viper or an Aventador look crazy with the steam rollers. Look no further than the X5. Even the non M X5s look performance oriented because of the 315s outback.

IMO 21s with a 40 sidewall fit the WK2 best.

Because the sidewall size (profile) is a percentage calculation of the cross section (width). If the cross section number goes up (wider tire) and you keep the same profile size, then the tire is wider AND taller.

in the tire size 295/45/20, 295 means the cross section of the tire is 295mm wide. The 45 means the profile of the tire (rim to top of tread) is 45 percent of the cross section (295 x .45). If you raise that 295 to 305 and keep it a 45, then it is 305 x .45 which = a larger sidewall as well. Only way to keep the profile lower, and width wider is to go to a 305/40/20. However, with that size you'll get your width, but also a larger fender tire gap because your overall diameter will be almost 3% smaller than stock. This will also effect your gearing and speedometer readout by almost 2mph. Furthermore, 305/40/20 are very sparse tires to find, but then so are 305/45/20.

He probably wants to go bigger for looks and maybe he likes that way I doubt he is trying to copy Mustang or vette in that case I'm sure he would have gotten those cars.... IMO

Re: Replacement tires on stock wheels

The reason for wider tires is for looks because I love the look of wide tires and I think the jeep would look great with a little wider tire because it will fill out the top of the fender a little better and I love the look of beefy tires. I don't think a wider tire will hinder performance if not maybe help it a little. I'm planning on installing the road magnet mid drop on it and I don't want more gap between the tire and fender. Do you really think the 45 will be a huge difference that will affect the performance negatively?
