Road Trip!

This year I drove our '12 GC SRT8 on a 2000 mile round trip vacation to Quebec City and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. The Jeep performed flawlessly.

The Maritime Provinces have spectacular scenery. Each province (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, & Nova Scotia) is unique.

I put the Jeep through it's paces on the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It's a 185-mile (297-kilometer) loop around the northern part of the Island.

We were fortunate that there was little traffic, & I was able to let the Jeep stretch its legs on a combination of winding curves, straightaways, peaks & valleys. The scenery was amazing.

Here's an aerial view (from the Internet) of one section of the highway.

... and a few photos taken during our drive.

What a fun drive! If you ever get a chance to visit Cape Breton, and want a fun driving experience, you should drive the Cabot Trail.

One thing I've never paid much attention to is the Jeep's gas mileage. However, I do check the computer from time to time. Usual highway numbers have been around 12.7 L/100km (approx. 18.5 mpg US). On this trip, the computer indicated 10.9 L/110km (21.6 mpg US).

The better gas mileage was a bonus on such a long drive. This is the first trip since I added a new air induction kit, so that might have affected the mileage numbers.

After a little more than two weeks on the road, we made it home safe & sound. I couldn't wait to clean the Jeep and remove the bugs, tar, oil & other road grime that accumulated during the trip. The ceramic brake pads worked great & the wheels stayed relatively clean, even after aggressive driving on the Cabot Trail. Here's a couple of pic's of the Jeep, taken today, all cleaned up & tucked safely in the garage.

IMHO, it still looks pretty good for a 4 year-old daily driver.

Awesome! I wish I had the time for a drive like that and it still looks great for a 2012

Road Trip!

Your jeep looks awesome. What a perfect vehicle for a trip like that. Wish I could find some empty cruising roads like that in northern jersey!! I can't go more than a few miles - if I'm lucky - before mashing the brakes for traffic or jackass drivers!!

Re: Road Trip!

JohnS, I really enjoyed reading of your road trip through Quebec and the Maritime Provinces. The photos of the Cabot Trail brought back old memories. I was born in Halifax NS and still visit almost every year. I have driven the Cabot Trail over the years in many different vehicles, and my family and I never get tired of the scenery. My last drive on the Cabot Trail was in a 2006 SRT8, now owned by my son. I now have a 2012 SRT, just like you, and just turned over 50,000 miles.

If you are interested, in 2012 my wife and I did a 6290 mile road trip through 14 states. I did a thread on the trip, with photos and narration. Please have a look and let me know if you enjoy it.

Just use the "search" function on the top of the page under "thread", and type in "6290 mile road trip".

Good luck, BigHemi2.

Thanks for heads-up about your trip. Looks like you had a great time, as well. My wife & I have flown to Phoenix/Tucson & Las Vegas but have never considered driving there. The Southwest has amazing scenery.

We've driven the East Coast of the US from here in Ontario through NY, PA, Maryland & Virginia, with the Jeep as well. It's funny, like most SRT owners I bought the Jeep for it's performance capabilities, but I was pleasantly surprised how capable & comfortable it is on long road trips. Miles of smiles. I also love the attention it gets everywhere we've been, and talking to local performance enthusiasts. On the Maritime trip, I used valet parking in Quebec City, Charlottetown PEI, & Halifax. That's something I've never done with my performance vehicles in the past. But I found the valets gave me preferential treatment after I showed them the Jeep & it's features, joking that I still wanted some tread on the tires when they returned it to me. It gave me piece of mind knowing that the Jeep was being looked after during our hotel stays.

My two Jeep SRTs have received a lot of attention from valet parking also, but more so from law enforcement. On our 6290 mile road trip, I was stopped a number of times by state troopers, but only received warnings. They were more interested in the specs of the Jeep, and some were hoping that their departments would buy SRTs as patrol cars.

The only speeding ticket I received on this entire trip was from an automatic camera in Tempe, AZ. It was waiting for me in my mailbox when I arrived home.

My Jeeps, past and present:
1993 GC Limited-Black
1997 Wrangler-Black
2000 GC Limited-Sienna Red
2006 GC SRT8-Inferno Red
2012 GC SRT- Deep Cherry Metallic Clear Coat

My cousin got one of those automatic tickets in the mail with a photograph of the rear of his vehicle and tag number. He mailed them back a photograph of a check in the amount of the ticket. The judge was furious and almost threw him in jail. It did cost him a heavy fine.

Great story! Gutsy but costly! Was the ticket issued near his home for him to end up before a judge? No way was I going back to AZ from PA to fight a speeding ticket. It cost less than $200 which is pretty reasonable. Some tickets on the big Interstates are $300 or more.
