Re: Shifter

Yeah, it's definitely not defective. Just a crap design.

In fact, that's what the NTHSA has determined. It's not defective, but the design is poor. It's not intuitive, the notches aren't clearly defined. That's what the investigation has moved to (and expanded to all FCA vehicles that use it). Design problems.

Chrysler knows, that's why the ditched it. That's good enough for me. No need to lodge formal complaints.

I don't really care if it's ugly, I wasn't discussing aesthetic design.

Looks like it works.

I don't care if you care, either. The Lexus is a shitty designed shifter and does not look like it works very well UNLESS you are watching where you shift. The Jeep shifter is not a difficult one to use except for those drivers who do not pay attention!

Those "gated" automatics are incredibly easy to use.

Infact, the Lexus RX is probably one of the most sold SUV's of the last 20 years. I've never heard anyone I know complain about going into the wrong gear in a Lexus RX. Jesus, I know probably a dozen people who have owned at leats one RX.

Is it ugly? Sure. I fail to see what that has to do with this conversation.

I don't understand these posts. FCA changed the shifter.

I don't have a problem with the shifter, but I recognize it's not a great design. That argument is 100% validated by FCA redesigning the shifter after 2 years.

To pretend peoples' complaints are without merrit is a joke when the company changed the design and the NTHSA just expanded their investigation to all FCA vehicles equipped with it.

I think signing petitions and wanting recalls is a little far.

Alas, this is the good ole internet. You can't just say "I like it, but yeah the design is bad". You have to be either 100% for it or 100% against it. Either "the shifter is perfect I love it!!" or "sell your SUV!!". Cracks me up.

Spot On!

I'll post this again:

I've never been confused or unsure about which gear I'm in. I actually don't understand how folks can not know if they are in PARK.

My main problem with this shifter is the transition from DRIVE to REVERSE.

If you use too much force, you may end up in PARK.
If you use too little force, you may end up in NEUTRAL.

If you're trying to do this transition urgently or in an emergency (like to avoid a possible collision), then it is VERY EASY to potentially end up in the wrong gear. In fact, the user "antsjeep" wrote about an accident that resulted in damage to his WK2 because of this exact issue.

It is a POOR DESIGN.

Re: Shifter

I will say this about the shifter in the '14 and '15 ... it really looks nice!

May it rest in peace.
