Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

When i started looking at replacement for our 200 series landcruiser i very nearly bought A SQ5 , That was till i discovered the SRT which at the time i knew absolutely nothing about. Was impressed with the Audi diesels' performance and finish but i really was after something a bit bigger without being as big as the cruiser as i want to tow a boat and fit my Beagles in the back. Bang for buck i think SRT is not too shabby.

Thank you! I should make clear this is for the TFSI version- thats the supercharged V6 north america gets and not the biturbo diesel the rest of the world gets. Again, I really hope to find myself driving a hellcat Jeep in the reasonably near future.

Where do you live in DC? I've seen an SQ5 in my condo parking garage a few times, but the spot is usually taken by an RR Evoque.

I'm in downtown DC as well, driving a slightly lifted 04 GC. I've damn near been begging my wife to let me get a new WK2 SRT to replace it, but maybe I'll have a better argument when she gets a new job haha.

I always thought the SQ5 was way more expensive than the SRT, but guess I also thought the SRT was a bit cheaper than it is.

Nice! budget boosted? i think ive seen a slightly lifted WJ around town. Before my SRt I had a 5.9 ZJ with a budget boost.

I live in a bldg at 1st and M NE so downtown DC is technically a bit off but for traffic purposes very much the same - you?

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

Thanks for your input everybody. I test drove a Macan S today. Didn't care too much for the shape but the interior is fantastic. Compared to a SRT though, it felt much smaller, shorter, slower...almost like a compact sport sedan. I've knocked it (and the SQ5) off my list, clearing the way for the Jeep. Now its down to the color choices. Granite was my original choice but I really want the Sepia interior which I think goes better with white. Back to the Jeep dealerships next weekend to look at color combos. Choices Choices.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT:

The Jeep is (obviously) the muscle car of the three. Everything about, from the styling to the engine note, is brash and American. Neither of those things is bad at all; I love those qualities. However, some people do not. It does drive very nicely and has a refined interior, although the plastic trim on the center console and in various other parts of the interior is a bit cheap for the price, in my opinion. I also think that the Sepia interior is a huge leap over the standard one in terms of niceness.

Porsche Macan:

The Macan is much more of a pure sports car than the Jeep. It feels much lighter on its feet and much more refined (not a knock on the Jeep, just a compliment to the Porsche) than the GC. In S trim, it is a tad slower than the Jeep in a straight line. The power delivery is incredibly smooth and quiet, meaning that the speed is not as noticeable as it is in the Jeep. The PDK transmission is lightning quick and shifts at all the right times, although the Jeep's 8-speed is still very good. The interior is absolutely fantastic, especially with the 18-way seats (unbelievably comfortable) and the leather package. The interior without the leather package is maybe a smudge nicer than the Jeep's (with Sepia), but it with the leather package, it blows the Jeep out of the water (in my opinion). One thing to note with the Macan is that the options are seemingly endless and allow for a LOT of customization, but expensive and add up quickly. However, it is entirely possible to get a very well-equipped Macan at or below the price of the Jeep.

Audi SQ5:

I did not get a chance to thoroughly test this one out, but I honestly don't care. It seems about as fast as the Porsche in a straight line, but doesn't handle quite as well. Still, it is definitely more of a sports car than the Jeep, which could be good or bad depending on your tastes. The Audi, at least to me, felt a bit dated compared to the other two. I would say that the cabin is about on par with the standard SRT interior, a level below the Sepia interior or the standard Macan interior, and quite a bit behind the leather interior in the Macan. Additionally, the technology in the Jeep and Porsche is years ahead (literally) of the technology in the Audi. The SQ5 is a bit cheaper than the Jeep, but I would honestly take a less-optioned Macan over an SQ5 if I didn't want to spend less than $65k. However, the Audi is much lower profile than the Jeep and the Porsche (especially the Porsche), so if that is your thing, the SQ5 might be fore you.

Bottom line:
If you want something that feels like a refined, luxurious muscle car, get the Jeep. If you want something that feels like a high-end, dare I say exotic (in some configurations) sports car, get the Macan. If you want something that is lower profile, get the Audi.
Very well put there Sir, I couldn't say it any better!

Before I made the decision on the Jeep, I test drove a 2013 Cayenne Turbo, 2014 Cayenne GTS and the 2014 Cadillac Escalade. The luxurious sport package, interior refinement and the rock solid handling the Cayenne offers is uncompareable BUT the Jeep is offering all that in a much lower price and the pure enjoyment of that 6.4L Hemi is something Porsche cannot offer.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I read a write-up last night at work on the Macan - the closest variant power-wise is the 3.6 with just around 400HP but in Australia it will set you back over 120K (that's without onroad costs)
If it were me comparing I'd wait for the Hellpussy Jeep to eventuate for that sort of coin - way way more raw bang for buck
The SRT interior is classy I loved it & it's another reason why I chose it

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I had the same three on my list and ended up with the SRT with zero regrets. It doesn't handle as well as the other two but it handles well enough and and I can tow our 5k lb trailer with no problem. Try that with the Machan or SQ5.

One thing on the SQ5, its technology stack feels very old to me (surprising for a company like Audi) but the screen is very small and you have to plug your phone into the glove compartment. Total deal breaker for someone like me. Just something to think about . . .

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

One more thing. I was worried about reliability but so far (12k miles) I've had absolutely no reliability issues. Downshifting on the 8 speed can be a little rough sometimes but it's not a big deal.

Silver Overland, 3" OME springs and 31s, but basically looks like a stock jeep should haha. No more minivan stance.

I'm in Columbia heights and I see a black, pre-facelift SRT WK2 driving around quite often and occasionally parked in front of my building. Wonder if that's anyone here...

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I only briefly looked at the Porsche - then quickly thought to myself .... " I am not paying 120K plus for a Euro Poncemobile that really has zippo aural music or excitement factor"

Q5 (or Q7) didn't even get a look in tbh .... boring !!!!

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

Great write ups, guys. I was looking at the SQ5, SRT and BMW X3 3.0 Diesel. The Macan wasn't out yet. But I reckon it would've been a close race between the Macan and the SRT.

When it came down to it, the SRT won out because of that American Muscle Car feel. Loud and obnoxious without being poncy which is a good thing especially around where I work. I get tons of thumbs up and positive comments everywhere I go.

The SRT isn't so big and cumbersome that it becomes a hassle finding parking in the city but that's not to say that I haven't driven it into a couple of garage/car parks and just turned around because I didn't want to risk damaging the beast. The hauling capacity is just right and I like the fact that the seat fold fully flat. If I need to have a snooze in the back, I can.

The SQ5 is a bad ass. Very refined and a decent size but the asking price for it here in Australia is ridiculous. +$100k compared to the SRT which is sub $90k. I just didn't feel I was getting as much for my money as I did with the Jeep. Even if the SRT was in it's most basic form down to roll up windows and manual side view mirrors, I would've picked it. I love a good diesel but my heart picked the SRT.

The X3 didn't really have a chance.
