Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I finally purchased the SRT8 which was about 5000$ more than the SQ5... The only thing I find annoying with the SRT8 is the built quality. I saw a defect in the paint, also the moulding are not properly put on every doors and also, the hood molding near the windshield is also too long and is not flushed to the hood which looks like a low end truck but otherwise, I like it a lot more than my 2009...

I also have a problem with the Uconnect 8.4an touchscreen...

I like the SQ5, have a 14 SRT but came from a 13 S4 with a stage 1 tune and it really woke that up. Sure it would be a blast in the SQ5. I drove a modded Q5 from Stasis at my dealer when their rep was there, I'm sure the SQ is even more impressive.

I also have lots of flaws in the paint.... When you get closer to the ground the paint is so thin you can see the primer underneath.... Poor quality.

I've got several dimples like this and several high dirt spots. Near impossible to take good pics... My iPhone has lots of dust inside of lens. Definitely can't get a shot of the light paint on lower panels

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

Wow! I feel fortunate. Both of my 15's had nice paint coverage. My only gripe was a little orange peel texture. The paint on my May build SRT definitely has less orange peel texture and seems to shine better.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

This is a great thread and it's been going for a long time.

Despite all the positives towards the SRT, I'm holding out for the new redesigned SQ5 (likely available in 2017) in Canada. I used to own a Jeep Commander 5.7 Hemi, which is bigger but less powerful than the Cherokee. I did enjoy driving that car, but it was super brutal on gas. I only got 9MPG on that overall. I can't imagine the Cherokee SRT will do much better (smaller but bigger engine).

But the SQ5/Macan vs the Cherokee is also like comparing apples to oranges. The Cherokee would be more rightfully compared to the larger Q7 or X5. So obviously the SQ5 is smaller (weights 4400lbs vs the Cherokee at 6500lbs).

For me it is about luxury and refinement while having that sports performance. While some people will prefer the sound and feel of a NA 6.2L V8 and the bigger size, that's going to be pricey at the pump, not to mention the environment.

However there are two additional factors that weigh heavily against Jeep.

The whole Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler group has failed massively in build quality and reliability in recent years (all three near the bottom of the latest reliability results, Jeep 2nd to last just above Fiat). I've also noticed a lot more plastic has been replacing metal in the last 5+ years on Jeeps.Consumer Reports 2015 Reliability

Also another thing not discussed is the horrific depreciation of the Jeep. Brand new, the 2015s are $75,000, but I can find 2014 versions for under $58,000. That's 29% in one year! Typically, cars will depreciate half their value after 5 years. Audis depreciate much slower, especially the S variants of all their cars. BMWs depreciate quicker than Audis in Canada due to BMW's favorable and aggressive lease rates, so they have a glut of supply on 2-3 year old cars.

Btw, when I started looking for new cars at first I wanted a used 335i, then a 435xi, then found out about the new Audi A4/S4 with the virtual dash, but then because I have a family, decided I wanted an SQ5 which is basically an S4 trapped in the body of an SUV, and somehow I find myself here talking about Cherokees!

For me, Audi has the perfect balance of performance, price, luxury, technology, aesthetics, and comfort for any of their S-Line cars and they depreciate slowly relative to the others. The other German brands -- BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche don't favor the same balance. For example, in BMW the M class cars are significantly more expensive and powerful -- too much so for daily driving. Most people don't track their vehicles. Also the new Audi's have significantly improved fuel economy due to lighter weights, better engines, and moving from supercharged to turbocharged.

I do sound like an Audi fan boy, but have never owned one before, but have owned a Jeep and two BMWs in the past. I really believe Audi is entering a golden age with their incoming models. Right now you can see the all-new TT and Q7. A4/S4/Q5 releasing in North America during 2016, followed by SQ5 and others in 2017. 2018 will see the new Audi Q6 etron -- fully electric SUV to compete with Tesla Model X.

Anyways, I hope my opinions help some of you make a decision one way or another!

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I have a 2016 Macan Turbo and the 2015 SRT. Granted, pricing is not even close - but the Macan (0-60 in a shade over 4 seconds) is quicker in stock trim against the stock trim SRT - and much more advanced. It's a better build quality and it's a Porsche @ 30K more.

Can't up the power to stupid levels like you can on an SRT, unless you want to spend an insane amount of money, but it's pretty quick to start with and the transmission blows the SRT tranny away.

I still love my SRT...and will continue to add more power!

SRT is still a great truck!

Hate to break it to you, but your about 1200# over on your 6500 estimate. The grand curbs around 51-5300 depending on trim and motor/drive train package
