SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I was pretty set on a new diesel Summit until I made the fatal mistake of test driving an SRT. Now I can't stop thinking about it. As much as I liked it though, I am finding it hard to justify the price tag over an "adequately" equipped (Nav/Leather) Porche Macan S or an Audi SQ5 can be had for less or similar $$. I haven't test driven either the Porsche or the Audi yet (I am going to) but I wanted to get thoughts from folks who may have already done the comparison.

Yes it is & by a long way ..... I am coming into my new '15 SRT from a V10 Touareg and what I will say is that if you are seriously considering a Krautmobile be prepared for a myriad of bullshit alarms and paying an obscene premium for services & parts etc
Just my 2 cents brother

driven both macan and SQ5, if you buy anything but the SRT you will have buyers remorse.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I've driven all three, and here are my thoughts on each:

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT:

The Jeep is (obviously) the muscle car of the three. Everything about, from the styling to the engine note, is brash and American. Neither of those things is bad at all; I love those qualities. However, some people do not. It does drive very nicely and has a refined interior, although the plastic trim on the center console and in various other parts of the interior is a bit cheap for the price, in my opinion. I also think that the Sepia interior is a huge leap over the standard one in terms of niceness.

Porsche Macan:

The Macan is much more of a pure sports car than the Jeep. It feels much lighter on its feet and much more refined (not a knock on the Jeep, just a compliment to the Porsche) than the GC. In S trim, it is a tad slower than the Jeep in a straight line. The power delivery is incredibly smooth and quiet, meaning that the speed is not as noticeable as it is in the Jeep. The PDK transmission is lightning quick and shifts at all the right times, although the Jeep's 8-speed is still very good. The interior is absolutely fantastic, especially with the 18-way seats (unbelievably comfortable) and the leather package. The interior without the leather package is maybe a smudge nicer than the Jeep's (with Sepia), but it with the leather package, it blows the Jeep out of the water (in my opinion). One thing to note with the Macan is that the options are seemingly endless and allow for a LOT of customization, but expensive and add up quickly. However, it is entirely possible to get a very well-equipped Macan at or below the price of the Jeep.

Audi SQ5:

I did not get a chance to thoroughly test this one out, but I honestly don't care. It seems about as fast as the Porsche in a straight line, but doesn't handle quite as well. Still, it is definitely more of a sports car than the Jeep, which could be good or bad depending on your tastes. The Audi, at least to me, felt a bit dated compared to the other two. I would say that the cabin is about on par with the standard SRT interior, a level below the Sepia interior or the standard Macan interior, and quite a bit behind the leather interior in the Macan. Additionally, the technology in the Jeep and Porsche is years ahead (literally) of the technology in the Audi. The SQ5 is a bit cheaper than the Jeep, but I would honestly take a less-optioned Macan over an SQ5 if I didn't want to spend less than $65k. However, the Audi is much lower profile than the Jeep and the Porsche (especially the Porsche), so if that is your thing, the SQ5 might be fore you.

Bottom line:
If you want something that feels like a refined, luxurious muscle car, get the Jeep. If you want something that feels like a high-end, dare I say exotic (in some configurations) sports car, get the Macan. If you want something that is lower profile, get the Audi.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

Thanks for the detailed write-up - just what I was looking for.

It is indeed the "muscle car" quality of the Jeep that is so appealing to me. Will try the Macan next weekend. Of course we know which one the wife is going to like. Would have been a much easier decision if the Jeep was 20k cheaper (or the Macan 20k costlier).

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I was tossing up between the SQ5 and the SRT but went for the SRT as in Australia:
- SQ5 was $20K more
- Servicing was on top (I got 3 years in my SRT) and very expensive
- SQ5 is much smaller
- was not as much "fun"

I thought the SQ5 did have some advantages:
- Fit/Finish was better
- It was quieter and the ride much smoother on our poor roads
- Fuel Economy was far better

All depends what you want in a car but the SRT is the "best" car I've had for decades.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I looked at all three.....I think the Audi and Porsche are both nice, but there was something very "non masculine" about them. The SRT is just so much more raw and beast like.......I picture soccer moms in a Macan or Q5 variants.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

A friend of mine has a new SQ5 and we had a chance to compare them side by side.
The SQ5 is much smaller both inside and out. The power delivery is also less brutal in the SQ5, but this is primary due to the way the diesel Turbo seems more linear and less of a hit that the 6.4 delivers.

I found the main advantages of the SQ5 were the fuel economy and the fit and finish, but the small size put me off. I also prefer the brutal sound of the SRT in full song, as the SQ5 is way to quiet.

As mentioned above the SQ5 is also a lot more expensive in AU. They paid $105k drive away, where the SRT is $85k. The servicing cost is also $600+ for the Audi, where the Jeep is $400.

The cars are also targeted at different markets, as the SRT is a SUV Musclecar, where the SQ5 is more a soccermum's car with the sports cred for the dad.

Re: SRT better buy than Macan or SQ5?

I came from an 06 SRT and more or less had my heart set on a lightly used 14 but ended up buying an SQ5. While I still have a soft spot for the '14 WK2 i have zero regrets. Below are the key deciding factors for me
  • I was targeting a pre TTL transaction price of ~$55k. That meant a used SRT but a brand new SQ5. Knowing how every mile was put on the odometer is very attractive to me.
  • The SQ5 is pretty damn quick - not far off the SRT. It will do 13.4 @103~ so merely a few tenths off the SRT. Im one of those who is pretty disappointed in WK2 '14+ performance. If it was a 12.6-7 vehicle like an x5M i would have a very hard time going with anything else.
  • Moddability. I was hopeful when tuning came out for the SRT but it doesnt look like thats yet panned out to anything worthwhile. On the other hand, I can get an APR tune and pully and reliably run 12.4s all day in the SQ5 for $2k.
  • The fit and finish is much better in the SQ5 (with napa leather package). Uconnect is better than this gen of MMI in the Jeep and the Harmon Kardon is also much better than the B&O in the SQ5. This was a tough call for me and I went back and forth on the SRT and SQ5 on these merits quite a bit.
  • The SQ5 is appreciably smaller and easier to maneuver and park in the worst traffic in the country. I live in downtown DC and the WK2 is at a size where it becomes unweildy. My WK1 SRT is about as big as id really want on these streets. The WK2 is really too much - i dont have a need for the extra space over an SQ5 so its all downside.
  • The SQ5 handles better - likely due to the large weight discrepancy. The SQ5 essentially weighs what my WK1 weighed.
  • Brakes. The SRT has been lauded for its brakes - and rightly so- but the SQ5 actually also has 15" front rotors and weighs 1,000 pounds less.
  • Reliability. Yea, funny to pick an Audi for that but the WK2 track record ive seen while lurking over the last few years is enough to give one pause- while the SQ5 seems to be very very sorted.
  • MPG. i dont really care about this (again, came from a WK1) but given how rarely i get to open it up due to traffic the somewhat better mileage is a bonus.

The only Macan I would buy is the Turbo and you start creeping over $90k really quick with options there so no go. The macan S is appreciably slower than the SQ5 and really is a good chunk more expensive when you option them identically. The macan also has degraded cargo capacity due to the roofline. The 3.0 TFSI is bulletproof in the Audi- who knows how the Macan engine or its DSG trans will hold up.

All that said i still get a little weak in the knees whenever I see a WK2 SRT drive by and if/when FCX gets their shit together and comes out with a Hellcat SRT Jeep i will beg borrow and steal to buy one.
