SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

I believe I noticed the new SRT8 will have Run Flat Tires (RFTs) which means no spare tire. In my Mini Van days, I had RFTS and vowed I would not buy another car with them, unless there is a wheel well in the back where you can store a spare. Will the SRT8 have an empty wheel well in the trunk area so you can carry a spare without taking up trunk space? RFTs are fine until you get a flat or other tire damage in the middle of nowhere. True you can drive up to 50 miles on a flat (maybe, depending on damage), but then who knows if you can get far enough to find a store to get a timely replacement. I always carried a spare on trips, but the spare took up trunk space.

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

the SRT8 never came with a spare- theyre not meant to though-

there is no space/empty wheel well for a spare in the back either- not unless you create your own area to store it while traveling.

for flat tire whoas.... have AAA card-

flatbed-

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

Yeah, we're out of luck... On the Charger SRT8, I have a wheel weel in my trunk BUT it is too small for a) full size tire and b) even if it was, or if you put a tire in your Jeep when you travel, a normal sized spare wheel won't clear the huuuuuge Brembos.. So you'll need to basically have a similar 20" or so wheel which can fit on our wheel hubs over our brakes.

May I ask why you vowed never to have another vehicle with run-flats??

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

the wk2 SRT is built off the wk2 pltform. Why would they change the rear spare tire well on the wk2 SRT? I am about 99.9% sure there will be a spare tire well. Now the problem will be like the above members say...can you find a wheel that will fit over the brembos, fit in the spare tire well and be a similar diameter to the stock 20x10's? The 20" equipped wk2's use an 18" spare wheel/tire. That may be a good starting point to find a wheels/tire combo that will fit and work. Its doable.....IMO.

I agree with Scott and since the other 20" wheel is only 8" wide it or a similar aftermarket 20" wheel with a narrower 20" tire would be a good starting point. I'm 99% sure the existing 20" wheels will clear the Brembo's, there's a ton of room with the HD V8 brakes on the Overland.

Maybe I'll check and see if the 20" Overland wheel/tire fits the next time I have a wheel off.

Yes mjw, you (will) have both, please let us know as soon as you are able to (but of course AFTER you have a few joy rides in your new WK8 though)!

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

Your spending $40-50k for the SRT8, why dont you just buy a extra SRT8 stock wheel for what ever it cost?

I wonder if they will have the latch down hardware for the spare though. It maybe an extra install item....but like I said above, your spending $40-50k, whats another $500 bucks.

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

Sorry but not sure I get the issue with run flats.

Your first line of defense is a cell phone - which you always have.

Never had an issue with run flats.

The harder shoulder....yeah we want that....it's a performance vehicle.

Sorry but the weight shed - not just the tire but all the bs that goes with it to change it....lots of weight savings there.

I don't have run flats on my 911 - but I don't have a spare either, no chance any wheel that fits in the trunk will fit over Big Red's.

Never had an issue - and I drive with racing tires on the street ;-)

So I guess I just don't get the issue with run flats...I like em.

About 7 years ago, I bought a Toyota Sienna AWD. At that time, it was the only Minivan with AWD, and it came with runflats because there was no room for a spare due to the AWD drivetrain. Some people who bought this Minivam were not even aware there was no spare (dealer/salesman fault). At that time the runflats were expensive, heavy, and not readily available depending on where you broke down with a flat. There were many complaints to Toyota from owners. Also, depending on where on the tire the object penetrated causing the flat, the tire was not necessarily repairable. That in fact happened to me, so I had to buy a new tire becuase I had a nail penetrate in the wrong place. So, I was left with a bad taste for runflats and always carrried a spare in the trunk (meaning I could not fold down one of the split third seats).

I understand runflats have improved over the years, but I personally would rather have a full size spare as I do now with my Overland Hemi. I also understand that runflats are the wave of the future.

Re: SRT8 and Run Flat Tires

a. That was 7-year old runflat technology (2G or 3G probably)
b. Toyota Sienna customers would LIKELY ALL be upset there's no spare, that is a total #FAIL for Toyota and not a defect in the product
c. Expensive, heavy, etc, all have been addressed in the 5th gen state of the art Pirelli runflats our WK8s are getting...

I won't say runflats are the best thing in the world (they're not obviously), and I'm guarantee there's situations where you might prefer regular tires, but let's face it, some vehicles are not set up properly to support spare tires, so this is at least a nice gesture from the manufacturer. Still, I think some day the SRT team will get this all sorted out and won't have to force runflats on customers like this...
