Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

I was experiencing the squeaky steering wheel syndrome which my dealer was kind enough to fix by replacing the wheel.

Post repair, I noticed these odd holes on the sides of the wheel shroud. Not remembering them on the original wheel and not having access to another 2014 SRT, I was wondering if A) I received a blem wheel, B) If the installer cut them in for some reason or if C) They are (oddly) normal.

Click for The Squeak

Thank you

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

I too am having the squeaking steering wheel and to-date cannot get them to replace it. I do NOT have those two holes on my 2014 SRT (early 2013 Build).

I am picking my rig up from the dealer tomorrow and will bring this up again...hopefully those holes assist with the squeaking

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

December 2013 build for me. They replaced the clock spring first which didn't help.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

Holes are from removal/installation process. Why? I was not told myself. I do not think it is necessary.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

I suspect you are correct Lauter but you'd think they'd be a dress up plug kit or something rather then two ragged holes as a reminder of the wheel being replaced. Thanks

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

No holes on mine...squeak will be handled next trip to the dealer. I would ask them about those holes for sure

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

My wheel was replaced and I have those holes also. I didn't notice them on my first wheel, but I did notice the cut leather. So, maybe I was just distracted.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

I noticed the holes on mine Jan 14' build, but look like they are part of the moulding process, as the holes are not clean. seems like a silly design as it does look bad....now that I noticed it.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

I talked to the dealer today and was told that it had to do with the clock spring. Still seems odd but the squeak is gone. Now searching for a nice 0.325" diameter cap plug to hide the holes with.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

Damn the squeaky thing is common? I thought I'm the only one who had it ... Left it alone though and it's gone. It was so annoying I can't believe such a thing can happen to such a branded vehicle.

Re: Steering wheel cosmetic defect?

Those holes don't exist on new product as the holes are overmolded as a part of the manufacturing process. Those are the access holes required to release the airbag from the steering wheel to get to the steering wheel nut. Until someone replaces your steering wheel / airbag those won't exist.
