Vapor Black Chrome Peeling

The Clear coat is peeling on my under 3 year SRT and I'm meeting some resistance from my dealership. Is there a way to escalate this?
There is obviously no damage to the wheel, not even a nick from a rock that could have potentially started it, but in several places I'm missing inches of clear coat.
What can I do to get them to cover it under warranty?

Call Jeep. They might be able to help. Dealers take calls from them seriously.

Re: Vapor Black Chrome Peeling

I noticed during my wash this weekend that I have one black chrome spider monkey starting to flake. My jeep has 24k miles but the warranty expires this week.

The corrosion warranty says it doesn't cover salt, sand, etc. Did anyone get pushback on this and still get fixed under warranty? I would guess my timeframe will be very tough to sell to the dealer.

Anyone know of repair or refinish options? How about care tips to prolong the rest of the finish?

Thanks,
Jake

I had an 05 Chrysler 300 C and also a 08 JGC that i had all wheels replaced under warranty because of pitting on the wheels, it has to be within the 3-36 warranty period and they check that it is not from hitting curbs or anything else

Re: Vapor Black Chrome Peeling

Just discovered that the only real repair option is a total strip and re-application of the PVD process. I was quoted $300 per wheel with a 14 day turnaround and a 5 year warranty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the black chrome have no clear coat - the reflectivity is from the chrome, is it not?

Pretty much expected that. I have one wheel that is bubbling in a spot but not peeling... hopefully never does. I don't run my vapor wheels in the winter.

Re: Vapor Black Chrome Peeling

The process as I was told by a local wheel restorer who spent time in one of the PVD plants;

A base powder coat of solid black, then clear, then the vacuum deposited chrome layer, then a powder coated smoke, then clear as a final. Obviously a tough process to touch up after a curb encounter.

According to him, the car companies prefer the PVD process for a few reasons - 1) PVD is a much more environmentally friendly process vs. chroming, 2) They had lots of warranty claims on traditional chrome corrosion in northern states. This process is much more resistant to salt corrosion, 3) The wheels are shipped over from overseas unfinished so they can finish on demand locally.

Just repeating what he said...

So you had peeling on your clear coat and they wanted you to pay to fix it? Were you under your 3 year warranty?

I don't believe the clear coat gives a reflective finish because it looks to be just as shiny under it. Mine is peeling in the slots on the spider rims. But there is definitely a coat on it and its coming off.

Re: Vapor Black Chrome Peeling

My issue was touching up a curb hit.

As you will see from the closeup, there are layers to this finish and you can easily see the black base coat.

It appears and I was told, that there is a clear coat above everything.

Did you ever get the rim refinished ?

I have 2 wheels with curb rash I'm looking to have refinished. I'm a bit concerned they may come out a different shade than the other 2 rims.
