What did I do today? I was car #4 out of 100 (or so) vehicles, stuck in snow higher than vehicles because of a class 4 (out of 5) avalanche in the Canadian rockies that happened within 1/8 mile of where I was driving.
traffic was moving really slow.. snow above vehicles. then traffic comes to a dead stop, nobody knows why.. we look ahead and there is no highway. It's all snow.
with a long line of semis, cars, trucks behind me.. and this is single lane at this point, you're sitting. I waited for about an hour, until a huge grater came hauling up in the opposite lane, moving one of the cement dividers between the lanes and plowing the road so we could turn around.
news story here
It was pretty touch and go for a bit. I have Pirelli Ice/Snow Scorpions on and I was still sliding all over the place. the front of the SRT was a snow plow itself, I was collecting snow and even though we were only moving about 10-15 mph.. abs was need a few times. This is at high elevations so it was blowing snow as well.
So I get turned around and an hour later, 20 minutes from my home, blue sky. I had no snow where I was so i assumed the pass would have *some* snow.. but not avalanche warning levels.
