What Tires are your Favorite?

I have a 2014 JGCSRT and live in Montreal, Canada.
I only have 13,500 KM on the car, and the stock Pirelli P-Zero run flats 295/45/20 are already finished.

Looking for opinions on what summer tires to get and what size.

The car not never seen winter, but considering turning her into an all year round car. Montreal has harsh winters and horrible road conditions. Also looking for opinions on what winter shoes and tires I should get for winter.

Thanks to all is advance.

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

I have tried lots of different tires but can't find anything that matches the performance of the factory 3 season Pirelli tires. I am on my third set but love the handling.
For winter I went with aftermarket spider monkeys with 265/50/20 bridgestone blizzzak dm2
this is the best setup that I have found that works well with the jeep.

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

Hi !

I live in Montreal as well and this is my second Grand Cherokee . The Pirelli Run Flat provide awesome handling as being runflats , the sidewall is very tough and gives great handling . Most other tire options will be softer and not as rewarding , except maybe in pouring rain Vs the Pirelli's .

For winter I am running Dunlops and they have been awesome , Blizzak's are a superior tire and would be my next choice , for wheels I am running stock Grand Cherokee wheels with spacers in front (winter only)as I actually like the stock wheel .

I ended up going through the brakes quite fast , rotors and pads were finished at 15 000 km , I ended up going with Lucas Cross drilled and stock pads , they seem to be holding out a tad better , but I know why I am going through the brakes and I am not complaining , on the contrary , the stock Brembo's provide awesome stopping power with the cost of being dusty , nothing water and soap can't fix .

Enjoy your SRT !!!

Cheers

Charles

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

Stock runflats are not my cup of tea. I have a guy locally willing to sell me a brand new set of P Zero's for $1,000. I am not going to buy them... they don't last, and they ride like garbage.

I currently use Proxes ST II. They are overall, pretty good. Wet traction is a bit less than my Scorpion Verde's I was using - this may be because I have the PSI at 36-37 cold on the Proxes to compensate for the softer sidewall causing less of a contact patch. The Pirelli's are also a lot wider than other 295 tires for some reason... at any rate, the Proxes never fail to hook 100% of the time when dry. Even when damp they hook just fine. When it's wet though, they will slip during aggressive driving.

For winter, I really don't think a true winter tire is necessary. We have AWD and a lot of sophisticated electronics helping us out. In my old Jeep Commander, it was an absolute tank in the snow with basic A/T tires. I'm thinking I'll use Parada Spec X's for my winter wheels - the tread pattern looks like it'd do really well in the snow. But being 295 might make it a little worse.

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

I have talked about this a bit in another thread but I will give you the cliff notes version. I have 71,000 miles on my 2012 and I have had the following tires in this order:

1. Stock pirellis all season
2. Yokohamas
3. Stock Pirellis
4. BFG KDWs
5. Nankangs

By far the best ride and the most reasonable price has been the nankangs, less than $500 for the set delivered plus about $100 for installation. BFG and Yokohama were VERY noisy after a few thousand miles. Pirellis were a nice tire but they wore very quick and rode very stiff (not necessarily a bad thing).

Best

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

Anything but the dreaded run-flats with their no flex sidewalls and horrible ride . I changed to Continental UHP and its a different, better car, with a way superior ride and no difference to the handling ...oh and they are quieter too

Re: What Tires are your Favorite?

Let me add to the choices. My Pirellis lasted 20k (miles). I had two tires with slow leaks, and they were getting pretty noisy. So I read all the info on alternative tires Tire Rack had in our tire size.

According to their website the Yokohama Ventus ST had the best ratings and revues - and at $150 per a great alternative. I suppose the Pirellis are supposed to be a superior tire, but the Hankooks were much quieter (perhaps an unfair comparison new to old).

I was afraid of being stuck with bummer tires for 20k miles. I don't take the SRT to the track, but the casual street thrills I partake in don't reveal any difference in performance from the Pirellis. If you would like to save $1200, I heartily recommend the Yokohamas.

This.

Short of driver improvement, tires are the most significant performance enhancement that a person can make to his or her vehicle.

The SRT is not a tank in the snow. While it wasn't too bad on local roads in some snow, highway driving is entirely out of the question. Last winter, driving on the Parada Spec X's on a highway, at incredibly slow speeds, was a nightmare. Most people seem to say it is the fault of the 295's.

Again, I personally plan on a set of snow tires for this coming winter.

For driving the rest of the year, the Yokohamas were nice albeit loud after a few thousand miles.
