Who's buying one?

I am pretty confident I will have one of these in my garage at some point in the next couple of years, but I will not over pay for it. (I also want one in Blue)

Yes, at $50k it is a value. But to pay sticker (or more) is crazy, unless the anticipated resale (residual value) is there.

My Question to the Forum. Who is buying one at the full boat price (MSRP or ~MSRP or MSRP ++) and how many will buy, but only at invoice or EP price or better?

I plan to offer my dealer my Jeep +XX for a new one. I will not overpay for it. The purchase price of the car does not matter to me as much as the cost of ownership and if the 2012 MB CLS AMG I have my eyes on, or a late model 911 turbo has a better/lower/reasonable estimated cost of ownership, I might think twice about the 2012 WK2 SRT8.

I will too have one in my garage eventually, but maybe not this year. When I do buy one, it will be at the 1% below invoice price thanks to the Chrysler affiliates program (unless they exclude the srt8). I am real curious to see what the next year will bring now that the srt brand has split off.

Re: Who's buying one?

The key is to wait, you don't seem in a hurry, obviously at first their won't be any substantial rebates but then a year in and with the possible rise in oil prices, plus the fact that most automakers are down grading to smaller displacements and added turbos. This particular model will be viewed not as niche vehicule but rather a politically incorrect dinosaur. That being said i'll be having one of the first ones in my city regardless of the price. As per the cost of ownership those two machines you mentioned before are awsome machines the porsche is very very expensive, the merc cls amg 2012 is yet to be determined but by comparison to the 6.2 wasn't that bad.My guess is that the jeep will be even cheaper then those two.

Re: Who's buying one?

Im planning on grabbing a '13 or '14. Probably look for lightly used (under 3k miles) something that was a quick return and barley broken in but something where I dont need to take the huge initial 15-20% depreciation hit! Im not a fan of first years even though my WK is, but sometimes you dont have a choice.

Hopefully by 2013 I will be in the situation I'm planning/hoping finically so I will have the ability to grab one. Fingers x'ed, lets hope everything pans out the way we'd all like, cheers to good fortune

I don't think "we'd all like" that. I don't want the WK2 SRT8 being worth $30k or less in a year or two. I'd rather it hold its value like the WK1's did so it's a respected and valuable vehicle.

2010's are still selling at $1500 less than I paid brand new 1.5 years ago I don't think that's going to change, so I wouldn't be so optimistic on your plans. These vehicles will still be worth $38-40k used in 2-3 years IMO.

Re: Who's buying one?

Just think yourselves BLOODY lucky it's not going to cost you around $90k (approx USD$95,000) like it will here in Australia!

Im with you, my percentages were somewhat exaggerated. All the 2010 were going for well below sticker just because of the inventory, tons of those things laying around and still to date. And the fact there were the last run of the model line also aided in their well below sticker prices. Im happy you got a good deal, but that deal wouldn't have been nearly as sweet in 2008 or earlier. The first year will go at sticker and maybe even more potentially and then its anyones guess from there. Who knows how they'll sell and what the market will do. But if they go like hot cakes and hold value well, being a second owner will be the only legitimate way to get a good deal compared to brand new. So again, Im talking about sticker, list price, the amount that Jeep asks for, MSRP haha. But thank you for reaffirming my beliefs. As far as the WK SRT8, $38k-$40k isnt holding much value in reality when they sticker at $48-$50k. Its not a huge depreciation hit but still a significant one enough to save you some serious $ compared to list. Figure most of those "2010s" you're referring to have low miles (sub 10k) that $10k drop in price makes the deal that much better.

So yeah I hope the 2012 does just that and most likely, like almost all cars do, it will take a significant hit in value once its driven off the lot. I dont want to make a bad investment but cars are just that and always will be, they depreciate. I never look at them as a potential asset unless your trading in the exotic market, things of that nature. So yeah. in my mind, you just have to make sure you get the one you want and use its to the best of its abilities so you get the most enjoyment/use out of it or whatever it is you wanted. Im with you I want it to hold "some of its value" but no doubt it will lose some serious value the day it leaves the lot and that is when I, the smart buyer will pounce and still end up with a like new awesome ride, fingers x'ed Even $4-$5k is significant, all depends on what type of person you are though
