Winter Car Washes

Curious what most ppl do with their babies in the winters. My options are $40 for a decent in/out wash (which usually lasts 1-2 days max); $12 for a gas station no-touch exterior was; $6 for an exterior self spray down.

I garage the vehicle every night as well.

Does a quick exterior only self spray down without using their brushes since I don't trust them - good enough in most cases?

Re: Winter Car Washes

I do a bucket of hot water from home. Thick plastic gloves like the house cleaning ones. and the gas station car wash spray down.. (without using their brush). so far so good IDK about once its like 10 degrees outside. might have to spend that $25 at the hand car wash once a week.

Re: Winter Car Washes

My truck gets the touchless car wash during the inter months. Too cold out and the hose is usually frozen anyways. lol
It doesn't do a great job, but it gets the heavy stuff off and the under carriage spray does good for underneath.
During the warm months, always a hand wash.

Re: Winter Car Washes

I use the gas station no touch wash, as well. The wash works pretty well removing salt & slush, but sometimes it leaves a light dirt film on the chrome & paint. If this happens, I towel dry the Jeep in my garage to remove the film.

I use Petro-Canada car washes. They let you re-wash the vehicle at no charge if you're not satisfied.

Mine is staying in the garage until spring. I love her too much to drive her in the salt.

I use the petro canada washes too , they do a pretty good job of cleaning the salt and slush off plus when you buy two you get a discount of 5 cents a litre

Quarter car wash ( $1.50 ) to blow the salt and sand off on a near daily basis unless below 20 F, if crapLess than a cup of coffee and TD cost of owning a black car. Will do the full car wash if weather looks dry place near my house does full wash vacuum and dry So that you is worth it but only if going to stay

Re: Winter Car Washes

What I do during the winter months is I get everything all prepped and ready to go. Head outside and wash it for a good 30-40 mins while freezing my kahonies off. Then I pull it in my heated garage and do the rest. My detailer is also nice and let's me use his garage from time to time. He has a floor drain and makes washing the car a joy in the winter.

I heard heated garages are bad. It melts the salt and causes more rust...

I think that used to be the case with older vehicles, but newer vehicles have better rust resistance. Both our daily drivers - Chevy Cruz & Jeep GC - have been undercoated just to be safe.

Back in the day, a neighbour had a 1962 Pontiac that he parked in a single car attached garage. After a few years of winter driving, the side of his car usually parked next to the house had rusted through, but the side next to the outside wall was fine. We attributed this to poor insulation on the house side of the garage, allowing heat from the house to escape into the garage, causing the melting & rust you speak of. Coated steel used in the manufacture of newer vehicles should help prevent this.

Re: Winter Car Washes

I've used Optimum No Rinse for the past two winters. Makes a big difference being able to wash my Jeep in the garage instead of out in the cold.
