Winter tires?

Really need your guy's opinion on great winter tires. Northern Alberta Cnd Weather where ice and compact snow dominates the road. Thinking about getting Pirelli snow tires ... what are your thoughts..

Re: Winter tires?

I have a set of Blizzak DM-V1 that I used last year. They worked great and they mounted easily onto the factory rims. The size I used were 275/45/R20. Through the speedo out a bit but no big deal.

Re: Winter tires?

Save some money and weight and get Blizzaks.

Re: Winter tires?

You need them. 255 Blizzacks on 9.5 inch rims. Cost about 1300 with everything. They rock. Last winter sucked and with these it cut through and stuck like glue.

Re: Winter tires?

Nokian Hakka 8's studded if you want the best. Nokian Hakka R2's if you want excellent reasonably long-lasting non-studded. Blizzaks if you want a slightly cheaper option that's probably better than the R2s, but one that won't last as long.

I've had several different sets of Blizzaks on different cars for multiple winters and every time I sell them they look barely used.

Re: Winter tires?

Agreed I let mine go for 4 seasons or about 30000 miles total and always had plenty of grip left. I personally feel keeping them on seperate rims extends the life, but that may be a myth

Re: Winter tires?

I bought a set of Pirelli Scorpions & replica wheels last fall. I ran them all winter & they performed very well on both ice & snow. The Scorpions are the same size physically as the stock P-zero summer tires. I found that some other brands of winter tires had narrower thread widths than the Pirellis, but that's not a bad thing for driving through deep snow. The Scorpions were also more expensive. In the end, I decided to stick with the Pirelli brand & tread width anyway.

Here's a pic showing a Scorpion on the left & the summer P-zero on the right.

Be that as it may (anecdotal) R2's will likely last longer. Blizzaks and all other winter tires will last many winters if used correctly - that is mounted when needed and not before, and removed as early as possible in the spring. But some last longer than others. I've owned at least 5 sets of Blizzaks over the years of various sizes, all were great winter tires but soft (partly why they're so good). Almost any unbiased review will tell you the same.

Greetings,

Based upon your area, I would seriously look at the Nokian's dedicated tires. Granted they are more money, but they work and safety is should be a priority. The Bridgestone's even though they have a stake in Nokian, do not use all of their technology.

The new Happa 8 is out:
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV - Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV studded tire provides grip and durability like never before / Nokian Tires

and they have other models as well:
Winter tires / Light Truck / SUV / Nokian Tires

Watch their videos as well.

Hope this helps.

Best for now.
