ugh, debadging issues
sooooo i've been wanting to do it for a long while, broke down and did it. but to make a long story short, i had a hit and run, and the body shop wasn't quiet finished with the clear coat on friday... but i needed the car (the FNG didn't mask the whole car off for the clear, so it settled all over and is rough) but i'm family friends with the owner, so it's going back in the morning no problem. so with that. i have a 2001 limited Steel Blue WJ

1 i did the hood first, everything came off fine, but you can see the jeep in the paint still if your within 5 feet and the right angle. fine, the buff tomorrow will clear it out.. i hope. mood-bummed

2 i did the v8 on the tailgate, came out perfectly. nothing left. mood-happy

3 did the quadra drive emblem, left alot of tape residue, and you can clearly see the outline of the badge. it kinda seems like the paint itself was on teh badge, cause there is a edge in a coat of paint... mood- ticked

4, did the last jeep, the "P" was the worste, just liek the emblem it seems like it just took the layer of paint with it. and it's almost bad enough to where you can flake it off with your nail if you want too. and it just gets a little better with the other 3 letters

pics tomorrow before i drop it off if i remember. and pics after for sure

any ideas about what to do with the paint? just clear it and seal it off? or sand it down and do it the absolute right way asap.

not to mention the rear tailggate of this car is effed from the previous owner, it's dented and creased pretty bad, but it didn't bother me as much as this did. so i will be getting another as soon as i find a non trashed junk one in town.. it's too expensive to ship to alaska.

Re: ugh, debadging issues
I have a 03 WJ and when I debadged it I just pulled the letters of and then used some gas to remove the adhesive left behind. Then I washed it off immediatly, buffed it, and waxed it.

For the first issue you posted, the reason you can see the Jeep in the paint is b/c your paint has faded from the sun. The paint under the Jeep hasn't faded. Buffing won't really take it out.

i think you just waited to long to debadge it, 10 years in the sun is a long time

Re: ugh, debadging issues
yeah from me experience anything over 3 years, esp if the car is in the sun for extended periods of time, you will have "outlines" after you remove the badging...GL with the fixes

Re: ugh, debadging issues
ahhh, didn't think about the fading.

not goooood. well the jeep on the hood doesn't look tooo bad now, and as far as the tailgate goes... it has to be replaced anyways, but it looks blehh.

i wish i thought about fading, and that sort, but on the tailgate the paint was on the actual letters, so it seems like someone taped it off, and painted another coat on top of it. and some bled onto the letters.

thinking sanding it down and painting over it would look decent? they gave me an extra pint of paint that they used to match the doors and fender. i could use that. any idea's?

Re: ugh, debadging issues
I used scratch X on the faded areas and it didn't completely remove it but it definitely made it blend a whole lot better. Hope that helps a little bit.

Re: ugh, debadging issues
Goo gone to get the crap off, then work on it with scratch X and it'll eventually blend out.

Re: ugh, debadging issues
well my only issue is now the tailgate jeep and quadradrive badges. everything else came out fine.

you guys gotta see a pic to know what i mean, i dont think anything would help except a good sanding and repaint. hopefully pics tomorrow

Re: ugh, debadging issues
I debadged my Steel Blue '04 and the hood and liftgate came out fine but the "GRAND CHEROKEE" on the doors left an outline. It was like they clear-coated over the emblems.

You could try a light abrasive polish, or just repaint/clear the area.

Re: ugh, debadging issues
The paint of the jeep is fadded and what was behind the emblems was protected from fading. Thats why when you remove them there is a ghost left over. A full exterior paint correction by someone like NX-1 would be the best fix.
