fuel gauge not going up to full

Hey guys i have a problem i was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas on what it could be.. soo i havnt filled up my jeep since i started driving but now that i have 4 jobs im able to fill her up and my gas gauge isnt going up to the full its inbetween the full and the next dash but then yesterday it went up to full i dont understand and now i did change my fuel filter back in june could this be a problem? or could it be the sensor in my gas tank? or the gauge it self?

thanks for your support

I wouldn't worry about it. I'd say it's just the fill arm float getting worked in as you have never actually filled it until now. It was probably stuck a bit.

Re: fuel gauge not going up to full

I just dropped my fuel tank this weekend and the fuel level sensor is just an open variable resistor. It can be that some dirt or corrosion has formed on the part of the sensor which was not used for a while. Just check it out for some weeks to see if there is any change. You could wiggle the car with almost full tank to have the float moving up and down to see if this will clear it. The float/resistor assy is easy to replace, the only problem is to lower the tank.
You could check the fuel indicator with the instruments self test. Just push the odometer knob and switch the ignition on. The instrument cluster will do a test of all indicators, lights and the odometer will shown all 11111111 and counts up.

I fill mine up nearly everyday (it is a work vehicle) and it occasionally will do what you discribe. Especilly if it was only down a little and I am just topping it off. But most of the time it will go all the way to full and stay there for the first 50 to 60 miles.

I would say, don't worry about it, next time it will probably be fine.

Thought I'd bump this since I'm having the same issue. Used to always show full beyond the F, but now, its in between the F and first dash. Have also lost 1.2 miles per gallon. Any ideas? 137k miles, BTW.

My Jeep just recently started doing this also. It used to read above full and now it will only read slightly below full. Either way, I don't think it really matters to me because everything operates the same.

Re: fuel gauge not going up to full

I got my 2000 WJ grand cherokee at the end of December and noticed that when I filled the tank it too (as others have reported) only goes up between the full and next mark down. This is with every fill. It stays there for 20 or 30 miles then starts dropping.
Worse than that, it never goes to the empty line. It runs out before E.
I'm used to my '89 cherokee XJ where the fuel went above full for 20 or 30 miles, and I could run for 20 miles on E, but I ran out of gas in the WJ when I tried that.
Do I attack the gauge or the sensor or something else?
Should I just put some tape where the full and empty really is?
