Detailing question
I am detailing my girl's Grabber Orange Mustang GT in preparation for a show this weekend. Was planning on the whole wash/clay/polish/seal/wax deal but the last few days of t-storms have left me unable to do all the steps before Fri night. Right now the GT has a single coat of Black Ice sealant curing for the suggested 8+ hrs. I had intended to apply a 2nd coat, let it cure and then top it off with a coat of carbuba paste wax.

So with only enough time to apply either the 2nd coat of sealant or a coat of wax, I am wondering which would be the better choice. If I decide to apply the 2nd coat of sealant and wax it after the weekend, is there an easy way to prep the surface of the car before waxing. Would a simple wash and wipe down with a quick detailer be enough?

Thanks in advance for any advise you can offer.

Re: Detailing question
Thanks Scott & Kyle. What's really sick about the GO GT is that it is driven & shown by a 19yr old girl who has just about reached the point of being able to out wrench her aging old man.

Re: Detailing question
joe if you haven't done it already DEFINITELY GO WITH WAX!!! the wax will give it more of a deep shine compared to a sealant that only gives shine and no depth, that's the difference between carnuba wax and a sealant.

Re: Detailing question
thats not what he was asking....he wants to do 2(two) coats of sealant and then the carnuaba...but doesnt have time to do all three. The easiest for HIM would be to do the the car is fully protected during his trip to and from the car show/meet...and then when he returns...wash the vehicle and add a coat or two of the carnuaba. My reasoning for that is so when he returns...he doesnt have to remove the carnuaba and risk removing the sealant to add the carnuaba and also have two coats of sealant.

Re: Detailing question
yeah but if he wants to show the car then he should add the carnuba! it would look better than the sealant.

the reason for 2 coats isn't for MORE protection but rather to make sure you get all the spots incase you missed any on the first coat. The two coats of sealant DONT layer on top of each other. a lot of people think this but it totally incorrect.

if he adds the wax he will have more than enough protection on the paint and will have a deeper shine on that awesome GT!

he can always come back and add a sealant if he wants, most carnubas only last a month or two anyway, they don't stay long on the clear coat like sealants do.

Re: Detailing question
well....I use 2 coats of sealant for the protection...not becasue I missed an area. I dont think Joe would miss anything either....Look at his tape job....LOL. And Im not stupid Irf....I have done this for years. Not going by what I read.......but by experience. I know exactly what a sealant does and how to use it. I was coming from it from a more practical aspect.......

Re: Detailing question
I think both of you are right ...

Irf is looking at this from a standpoint of awing the audience at the car show

Scott is looking at this from a practicality stand point

Case solved LOL :D

Re: Detailing question
i know you've been doing it for years and that's why i'm surprised you said a sealant. no reason to start acting this way.

his tape job is great! but if he's going to a SHOW then he should go with a carnuba for depth/shine IMO. what he does is up to him. I'm giving my opinion. just bc i didn't agree with you doesn't mean im wrong and you're right!

"I use 2 coats of sealant for the protection"
if you use 1 coat and don't miss a spot, that 2nd coat doesn't do jack! hate to tell you that! you're not "layering" the sealant!

Re: Detailing question
Actually....the shine and depth comes from the polish etc. and not the carnuaba. If you had ever done a complete paint would realize that. Also......MOST sealants can be layered as many times as you please as long as you let the sealant FULLY cure...just like Joe did. As Im sure Joe doesnt have one of the fancy sealants that you have read about on one of the fancy detailing sites....and is using what the common man can find at an auto parts store....Im pretty confident to say his sealant is not one that you cant layer. I personally dont know of any...but I use what works for me and not the latest craze I read about on a detailing forum. If a sealant can bond with a cars can bond with itself.
