Problem with Radiator Fan???????? Please HELP

I don't know much about cars, but I am willing to learn. A couple of guys were checking my radiator fluid for me when they noticed that my radiator fan was moving slow. The guy could stop the fan with his finger, and then it took a little effort to start back up. Their first answer was to replace the fan, but at the moment i cannot afford to change anything unless i know what is specifically wrong.

Can someone please help? I need to know what is wrong so a mkechanic wont take me for a ride

First of all we need to know about which type of fan you are talking. Your car can have a viscous type, an electrical type or a hydraulic type of fan. So check if the fan is driven by the engine (the viscous type), it has an electrical motor driven fan or that hydraulic lines go to the fan motor. When we know this, we can try to help you out better.

You will be fine. The 4.7 has an electric fan and a pulley driven fan. You can actually free up some HP by removing the pully driven fan....and you arent overheating. I removed the pulley driven fan on my 4.7

Are you sure about that Scottina? As far as i know there is or only a hydraulic fan, or you have the combination of viscous coupling fan with electrical one.

Re: Problem with Radiator Fan???????? Please HELP

My WJ has the hydraulic fan feature and this fan is always running when the engine is on, only with 100-500 rpm when the engine is not hot and it will ramp up when the engine becomes hot. I have never tried to stop the fan when the engine is idling however.
