Finally nitrogenized my WK tires

I've run siped, nitrogen inflated tires on my LX for about 3 years and just inflated the siped WK tires with it. My experience on the LX (with siping and nitrogen) has indicated better tire life (40K on my original ContiSeals when everyone else was getting 10-20K), better traction (especially in rain, snow and ice), and better fuel economy. Time will tell if/how much difference this will make on the WK. Certainly can't hurt though. Siping runs about $40-50 for 4 tires and servicing 4 tires with nitrogen costs about $20. FWIW, here are some references on siping and nitrogen enflated tires.

I could be wrong, and dont have any experience with tires that haven been siped after they are produced. IMHO, sipes should be manufactured into the tire, not produced by a machine that cuts into the lugs. I believe this will weaken the lugs. It may be beneficial for traction in wet and icy conditions, but this little move will also increase your surface area on the road, great for traction, but poor for your mpg.

So while most modern tires have sipes built in for traction, especially winter and all season tires, adding them after the fact is probably not a good thing to do. Buy the appropriate tire designed for your type of driving and weather will achieve the best results.

Alot of guys have been siping mud tires and super swampers etc for years and had nothing but positive benefits. I think you just need to know how to do it properly and you will be fine.

siping?

Siping are the little tiny slits in each tread of the tire. they help the tire keep a break in surface tension as it goes over the road to prevent hydroplaning and give better braking. pretty much the only tires that dont have siping are race tires and most mud tires.

Re: Finally nitrogenized my WK tires

My WK came with nitrogen in the stock tires from the factory. the only real advantage in my opinion is the tire pressures do not fluctuate as they do with normal air inflation. I had my snows inflated with nitrogen but have been lazy in doing it in my Nittos.

the tire shop where i am wants $20 per tire for nitrogen, that seems overpriced to me otherwise I'd try it.

SCAM. Monitor your tire pressure and get 99.9% of the benefits of nitrogen for free.

I went to Fountain tire here in YYC, and they charged per size and what I wanted for inflation. I think four cost me $50.00 maybe a bit more.

Well, I can tell you here in YYC, the temp changes drastically. I didn't have to put anything in the snows or my stock tires. My SRT8, I had to add air all the time to all four tires...... so perhaps there is something to my unscientific observations.

Go to Jensen Tire. They'll fill for free...at least top you off. If you buy new tires it comes with it and a nice warranty.
