WK2 with W5A580 Trans. Question

Hello all,

I have heard about the W5A580 MB trans. having a water infiltration issue around the dipstick/Trans hole. Does anyone know if they have sealed this somehow for the 2011 WK2?
I also heard that some other W5A580 trans. doesn't even have a dipstick. I have scoured the under hood photos I could find and I can't see a Trans. dipstick in any of them could it be it has the dreaded sealed trans???:(

Re: WK2 with W5A580 Trans. Question

it's not sealed the trans fill is right above the oil dipstick, it's covered with plastic lid ... you can get a dipstick through ebay for $30 max and that should help

the water leak is the o-ring seals that connect a 13-pin lead right next to the bellhousing of the transmission that goes into ur valve body. Only replace that if you deem necessary but I checked mine recently did not find any issues. plus if water gets in ur whole tranny is gone

What are your concerns or symptoms?

I thought the water thing was an issue that was fixed with a TSB in 2006?

Thanks,
I don't have a particular concern yet, I have a 2011 V6 on order as we speak (due to arrive next week, I hope) and I'm just doing my homework. I read a few things about the W5A580 and some was a little troubling. If there was an unresolved issue I wanted to know so something could be done before it created and issue. As for the no dipstick thing I was just not sure at all if the new 2011 even had a trans dip at all.

thanks for your quick reply guys!

By the way, while I have you collective wisdom at my disposal I have also read that the QTII MP3022 TC was not designed originally for continuous auto 4WD operation. Apparently when used originally in some GM trucks the TC center diff clutch bearing would go because it was not a continuous duty design. Since there is no 2WD option with the QTII TC I am hoping this has been changed. Any thooughts??

IMHO you already ordered it and should have no worries about it, until something does happen and I'm guessing by then u'll have warranty on it ...

All the trans issues that the WK faced with the Nag 1 have been mostly addressed and answers can be found on the internet.

Congratulations on ur purchase what color?

It's Inferno red, Laredo X with Adv. pack I and Tow I.

I'm an R&D/Process Eng. manager at an electronics factory here in Toronto so I can't help digging into the gory details about everything mechanical... My wife thinks I'm crazy...

Haha I'm the same way when it comes to that ... I say your wifey is right on that one ... you should be fine, one thing to keep in mind though that the first year production of any new models usually tends to have some glitches here and there but there will definitely be TSB's all over for those and they'll take care of it real good.

I don't know about the 3.6L, but the 5.7L definitely does have a transmission dip stick. This surprised me coming from an '06 KJ Liberty which was the last year the 3.7L had a trans dip. 07+ KJs & KKs don't have one.

Re: WK2 with W5A580 Trans. Question

Page 82 of the downloaded "User Guide" shows no dipstick for the 3.6, but on page 83, it shows one for the 5.7. In that picture for the 3.6, a yellow tab shows just behind the oil dipstick, so that may be the access point for fluid fill.
