2002 Grand Cherokee overheating-Help

My brothers jeep over heated today. He was in the driveway talking to someone on the phone idling for about 15 min and he said his temp gauge went up and when he popped the hood, coolant was coming out of the reservoir. I dont know the exact specs but i think its a 2002? Irfan probably knows. Anyways, im not too familiar with jeeps but i do know my way around the engine. The thermostat is opening up, i know that because the upper rad hose is getting really hot, meaning hot coolant is going into the radiator. The fan doesnt seem to turn on. I checked the fuse and it seems fine. Is there some sort of radiator temper sensor? I know on my saab and vw there was a sensor that was plugged into the radiator that controlled the fan. Any help is appreciated

Which engine...4.0 I6? If so, sounds like fan isn't turning on because the relay is toast. VERY common issue on WJ 4.0's....writeup is here: http://www.jeepslimited.com/index.ph...=37&Itemid=127

BTW, if you want to test the fan itself, just use a couple of leads with alligator clips to jump it with a 12V source.

awesome, ill take a look later today, i was planning on jumping it to make sure its not the actual fan motor. It was rotating freely when i spun it by hand

Seems like a good price (goes for about $60 on one of the cheapest online dealer parts sources). You can get an additional 8% off if you use Bing (formerly known as Microsoft Live Search) cashback with PayPal. If you don't know what that is or how it works PM me and I'll walk you through it (it's quick, free, and Microsoft owned/operated).

Yup, most likely the fan relay. Just today my coworker said he replaced his on his wife's 2000 WJ.

i also had this problem on mine and hated it! i didnt change my relay on mine... all i did was change the connectors. you might want to try to see if this is the problem. to check wait till the temp heats up to 210 and if the fan doesnt turn on and goes past that temp move around the connector's wires to see if it turn on
